Japanese Edo Six Panel Screen Flowering Morning Glory
About the Item
Spectacular 19th century late edo period six panel byobu screen featuring flowering morning glory vines (as-agao). Machi-eshi or anonymous town artist painter crafted in an amalgamation of stylistic elements from various schools. The outline of the painting is in the Kano school style while the composition and decorative gold flecks are attributed to Rimpa and Hasegawa school influences. The painting has a desirable age and patina with old repairs that add to its character and charm. Ink and vibrant natural color pigments painted onto gilt paper. The screen is set in a black lacquered frame with a gold silk brocade border having a foliate design motif. From an estate San Francisco, CA and formerly from the Larry Ellison collection.
