Two Small Japanese Cloisonne Dragon Vases, Early 20th Century, Japan

About the Item

Two charming, small Japanese cloisonné dragon vases, Meiji to Taisho period, early 20th century, Japan. The miniature vases of baluster form, with tapering ovoid bodies, high shoulders, short necks, and slightly everted mouths. The small vases decorated in the cloisonné technique, with goldstone and ginbari highlights. Each vase featuring colorful enamels, dense wire work, and a single dragon writhing and wrapping itself around the body of the vase. The first vase with a white cloisonné ground, and featuring a dragon of reddish brown color flecked with goldstone. The underbelly of a light turquoise. The second vase with a black cloisonné ground, and featuring a dragon of green and yellow goldstone. Stylized clouds of yellow, blue and green ginbari dot the black ground. The vases unmarked.
