Meiji Period Bronze Centerpiece/Bonsai Planter Basin, 1890

About the Item

Meiji Period Bronze Centerpiece/Bonsai Planter Basin, 1890 This Meiji period bronze centerpiece or bonsai planter basin is crafted in a rectangular form with a wide, flat rim and deep interior. The exterior is adorned with a relief depicting dragons in high relief among swirling clouds, demonstrating meticulous modeling and dynamic movement. The dragons' bodies are rendered with detailed scales, while their limbs extend outward, enhancing the dimensionality of the design. The basin rests on four elaborate feet, each shaped as stylized dragon claws gripping small rolling spheres. These feet provide structural support and elevate the piece. The bronze surface has a rich patina, emphasizing the depth of the relief work and lending the piece an aged character. This type of bronze work reflects Meiji period metal craftsmanship, which saw a fusion of traditional Japanese motifs with highly refined casting and chasing techniques. Artisans of this period, often working within specialized foundries, achieved remarkable detail and textural contrast through advanced casting methods and selective patination.
