About the Item

A Large dark patinated bronze okimono from the Meiji period (1868-1912) depicting a running elephant with its trunk raised. The dark patinated finish lends the surface a soft luster and a highly lifelike visual depth, enhancing the finely engraved natural folds of the animal’s skin. On the other hand, the tusks, are extremely smooth and soft to the touch. This scene conveys a sense of power, movement, and vitality, capturing the viewer’s attention and inviting them to admire the delicate strength of the running elephant. The running elephant is captured in a moment of dynamic and forceful movement as the position of the raised hind leg suggests the relentless rhythm and unstoppable force of the animal. The lifted trunk adds further dynamism to the piece, creating a sense of motion and life. Additionally, the animal’s head is turned to the left, imparting greater vitality to the okimono. The artist who created this sculpture undoubtedly paid meticulous attention to the anatomical details of the elephant. The curvature of the tusks, the folds of the skin, and the vivid expression of the eyes, in order to make the artwork as realistic and engaging as possible are some finest details. This okimono is signed Asakura Yoshiharu beneath the belly of the pachyderm with a raised mark within a square reserve.
