Large Antique Chinese Blue and White Porcelain Bowl Hand Painted Circa 1770

About the Item

This antique Chinese porcelain bowl was handpainted in shades of cobalt blue during the Qianlong Era (circa 1770). The exterior of the bowl is decorated with graceful ogival panels arranged in a symmetrical, graceful composition. The panels showcase beautiful plum blossoms, peonies, and chrysanthemums—symbols of resilience, prosperity, and longevity in Chinese culture. Delicate butterflies flutter above some of the blooms, adding a sense of movement to the composition. The vivid cobalt blue stands out against the luminous white porcelain. The interior of the bowl is decorated across the top with a band of diamonds and eight cartouches, each filled with floral decoration. In the well, we see peonies emanating from rockwork with butterflies above. The motifs and styling pay homage to the earlier Kangxi period. The exquisite design blends artistic refinement with historical significance. Dimensions: 12" diameter x 6" tall Condition: Excellent, with some mineral staining in the well (see image). Price: $5,600 Background of Chinese blue and white porcelain: The earliest examples of Chinese blue and white porcelain date to the Tang dynasty (618–907), but the technique fully developed during the Yuan dynasty (1279–1368). Artisans mastered the use of cobalt blue, a rare pigment imported from Persia, painting intricate designs on finely crafted white porcelain. During the Ming dynasty (1368–1644), blue and white Chinese porcelain flourished. It became highly sought after, not only in China but across Europe, the Middle East, and Southeast Asia, influencing ceramic traditions worldwide. The Qing dynasty (1644–1912) saw further refinement, particularly under the Kangxi Emperor (1662–1722), with delicate shading techniques and more varied patterns, from landscapes to mythological scenes. By the Qianlong Era in the 18th century, blue and white porcelain was a major Chinese export collected by royalty and aristocrats worldwide.
