1990s Bob Mackie Blue Beaded and Sequinned Dress

About the Item

Fabulous Bob Mackie long sheath dress and fully embellished in iridescent midnight blue sequins and bugle beads. Circa early 1990s, the neckline is high and the collar and bodice is extremely detailed with a mesh panel giving the illusion of a deep plunge. The full length sleeves have also been left unlined so you see glimpses of skin through the beadwork there as well as they taper down to the wrist. A classic sheath shape, the waist is brought in but there is no horizontal seam to break the lines of the scrolling bodice design. The back has a deep v but enough to cover a bra and closes with a central zipper. The dress has a high front slit and is fully lined from the deep plunge in a semi sheer, black silk crepe. These dresses were fabulously costly in their day and always hand beaded by the most skilled artisans onto signature black silk mesh. Tagged a vintage US 6, this is fairly true to size with very slight stretch and equates to a UK 10. Our model (5ft 11in / 180cm) is a UK 8-10 and this fit her well. MEASUREMENTS Bust - 38 in. 1960s William Travilla Green and Blue Sequin Dress
By William Travilla
Located in London, GB
This is a late 1960s or early 1970s couture sequinned maxi gown by William Travilla whose name is synonymous with Marilyn Monroe for whom he worked as a costume designer from 1952. He designed, arguably, the most famous cinematic dress in history, the white pleated halterneck dress for 'The Seven Year Itch' and was Oscar nominated 5 times winning for 'The Adventures of Don Juan' where he designed costumes for Errol Flynn. He designed for his own label from 1957 and was widely acclaimed for his work on the television series The Thorn Birds and Dallas during the 1980s. The silk fabric in this gown is just beautiful and has an abstract almost painterly foliage print design; the vibrant greens and blues invoke a tropical vibe. Overlaying the silk from head to toe are tightly spaced clear sequins that have been joined together with a a silver thread giving an iridescence to the top layer of organza. The dress has a deep V-neck crossover empire line bodice with hidden covered popper buttons for modesty along the V-line. The gathered skirt is very full and is separately lined underneath in a fine quality silk crepe. A green velvet band with a neat bow completes the look. There's lots of hand finishing details on this dress and it is so well made that you could wear it either way around depending on whether you wanted slightly more coverage. The label inside the dress reads 'Haute Couture by Sally's and then the address is Palisades Park, New Jersey. Whilst not strictly, haute couture, this dress is as close to American designer royalty that you can get. A fellow vintage dealer I very much admire, Shrimpton...

1960s Tony Armstrong Raw Silk Turquoise Dress
Located in London, GB
This 1960s Tony Armstrong evening dress is cut in a classic and flattering column silhouette with a high rounded neckline and short, slightly capped sleeves. The front is very lightly embroidered with fine blue thread in a criss-cross pattern. This continues round to the back of the dress, where a concealed original metal zipper ensures a smooth and seamless fit. A pair of right and left darts to the front and back emphasises the waist. The fabric is a very fine quality peacock blue raw silk with a satin sheen to it whilst it is fully lined in a lilac coloured acetate. A best fit for around a UK 8-10 or US 4-6. Superb vintage condition and looks barely worn, we noted only a small area of discoloration to the lining near both the sleeve underarms but this is totally unseen when worn. Tony Armstrong was a British couture...

Bruce Oldfield Royal Blue Couture Dress
By Bruce Oldfield
Located in London, GB
A couture contemporary dress , circa 2010 from Bruce Oldfield, a celebrated UK designer who is in his fifth decade of exclusive design. He is renowned for his occasion wear and this is a beautiful and understated example in royal blue silk chiffon and silk crepe de chine. The chiffon fabric forms the top layer of the body of the dress. The sleeves, which are bracelet length, remain sheer and they fasten with four fabric covered buttons. The crepe de chine underdress has very elaborate construction with a fully boned and padded bodice section. The artful internal panelling has a full corseted back fastening with hook and eyes to give this dress an incredible shape so that the top layer of chiffon floats over the body. All this shape work is artfully concealed and complimented by the skilful placement of an invisible zip to the centre back of the chiffon top layer. The dress has an elegant cross-over portrait neck...
