1920s House of Adair Floral Black Crepe Beaded Flapper Dress

About the Item

The House of Adair was a Parisian atelier that created beaded silk gowns for the export market during the 1920s. They were retailed in the best department stores of the day, especially in the US and UK. The designs were inspired by haute couture fashions and popular themes including orientalism and the geometric forms of the Art Deco movement. The workers has all been trained in haute couture methods and rare surviving pieces are often acquired by museums and fashion institutions including Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. This dress has a sleeveless, blouson top style v-neck and is fashioned with a lightly gathered drop-waist. This fluid, tubular tailoring was typical of the must-have dresses of this era and the silk crepe is adorned with brightly beaded flowers, among them sunflowers, thistles and gerberas. The original label sits inside the waistband and reads “Adair 4. Cité Paradis Paris”. A century old, this piece is in flawless antique condition - absolutely extraordinary for something of this age. The dress slips on over the head and can be worn with due care and attention. Due to the relaxed nature of the design, she will fit up to a US 6-8 or UK 10-12. MEASUREMENTS Bust - 40 in. 1970s Documented Jean Varon Black Spider Cobweb Dress
By Jean Varon
Located in London, GB
Fine and rare Jean Varon spider cobweb dress which can be dated to the designer's 1973 collection and featured here in the September issue of British Vogue. Fashioned in a sleek black jersey with a slight sheen, it has faceted-domed glass buttons down the front and around the wide cuff billow sleeves. It has a half-length front hidden zip for ease of access. The embroidered tulle panel on the back with applications of beads and sequins forming spiders crawling around cobwebs and has made this dress the most prized of all John Bate's designs. They rarely come up for sale; this has been in Circa's collection nearly 20 years and is notably held in several fashion museums worldwide. In fabulous vintage condition with absolutely no issues and is worthy of museum acquisition. The only thing if we're being very, very picky is that there are two tiny pin holes on the back near the right-hand seam; absolutely impossible to see when worn and only noticed when the dress was held to the light. It is best for a size UK 8 or US 4 and smaller on account of the small waist. Notes on Designer: John Bates was a highly regarded British designer who began his label Jean Varon in 1959. Famous for sheer panels, short hemlines and bare midriffs, he was one of the pioneers of the miniskirt and trousers for women...

1980s Charles Jourdan Black Cold Shoulder Dress
By Charles Jourdan
Located in London, GB
I love the simplicity of form of this early 1980s Charles Jourdan black cocktail dress. It has a wide boatneck and fantastic cold shoulder sleeve so that the top of the arm is exposed. The sleeve itself is batwing and very tapered, finishing in a neat, buttoned cuff. The pattern on the fabric reminds me of the lines created by waves hitting a sandy beach. Its such an interesting jacquard silk feel material with the way that the weft and warp has been woven creating both matte and satin finishes to bring out a two-dimensional look. The dress it has a thigh high split...
