Centre Table Attributed to Holland and Sons Related to a Table in Clarence House
Located in Lymington, Hampshire
A centre table attributed to Holland and Sons related to a table in Clarence House, this exceptional table has a circular top decorated with six radiating amboyna veneers with a border of concentric marquetry rings. The decoration comprising kingwood bands within boxwood stringing, a continuous boxwood laurel wreath with ivory berries on a satinwood ground and further amboyna borders. The frieze has amboyna crossbanding and applied ormolu sunburst medallions. The support is composed of purpleheart columns inlaid with kingwood, terminating in low splayed feet, which encircle a classical urn on a plinth. The superb ormolu mounts include acanthus leaves, classical masks and patera. English, circa 1860.
A table with a similar base and particularly fine ormolu mounts was exhibited by Holland and Sons in the International Exhibition in 1862 and illustrated as plate 40 in J. B. Waring’s book (see pages 100-103 for further references to this exhibition). A further closely related piece was in the collection of the late Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother and is shown in the Morning Room in Clarence House in the Daily Mail’s article ‘Inside the private world of Prince Charles’, November 2018. Originally founded by Stephen Taprell and William Holland...

Pair of Late 19th Century Demilune Side or Console Tables in Neoclassical Style
By Edwards & Roberts
Located in Lymington, Hampshire
A Fine Pair of Late 19th Century Demilune Satinwood and Inlaid Side or Console Tables in the Neoclassical Style Attributed to Edwards and Roberts
This fine pair of neoclassical-style tables are of demilune, or semicircular, shape and veneered principally in satinwood. Large-scale panels of satinwood have been laid on the carcass of the frieze to give a segmented effect, which is very attractive. The tapering square-sectioned legs and contrasting spade toes are all classic Sheraton design features, being reused here a century later. The most impressive parts of the tables are undoubtedly the beautiful tops, with the central feature being an inlaid fan-shaped patera, centered by a smaller example of the same form with additional penwork foliage on it. This, in turn, centers on a semicircular feathered boss. Around the edge of the tabletops is a wide crossbanding upon which a repeating neoclassical design featuring penwork scrolling foliage and urns is delicately executed and highly attractive.
Footnote: The quality of the present tables indicates that they would have been produced in one of the leading workshops of the period. On stylistic grounds, the most likely maker is Edwards and Roberts. Particularly adept at producing furniture in the inlaid Sheraton style, the firm had an elite clientele and, as such, was able to make the finest furniture without cutting corners. For an example of a Carlton House table...

A pair of Victorian marble revolving topped pedestals
Located in Lymington, Hampshire
An unusual pair of Victorian marble revolving topped pedestals. One marked ‘Forced Lesson’, one marked ‘Forced Prayer’.
These beautiful pedestals were clearly designed to hold sculptures with the titles of the works inscribed on the stems. The fact that the pedestals, and therefore the related artworks, were clearly made as a pair has allowed us to research them and we are delighted to have discovered that, at the Melbourne International exhibition in 1880, Pietro Bazzanti and Son of Florence exhibited two artworks with the names Forced Prayer and Forced Lesson (items 338 and 339).
Another artist also exhibited a piece titled Forced Prayer at the same exhibition but Forced Lesson is a very unusual title and, as stated before, the fact that the pieces were clearly intended to be a pair reinforces the attribution of provenance in this case.
These fine pedestals are a very practical and usable size and the carved swag and star detailing are very desirable attributes. They would make a fine pair of display stands for vases...
