Known for their contemporary elegance and comfort, Steve Chase’s residential interiors embodied the casual yet opulent style of California’s affluent. Natural elements such as wood, granite and leather prevailed in his sensuous designs, often enhanced by subtle lighting. Preferring to work closely with each project’s architect, Chase deftly blended all the elements of design to create a whole greater than the sum of its parts.
Realizing his talents earlier than most, Chase began shaping his career and his distinctive style at age seventeen when he joined the design firm of La Tienda in Los Angeles. A 14-year affiliation with Arthur Elrod Associates followed, ending in 1980 with the founding of his namesake firm, Steve Chase Associates. With a staff of more than 20 based in Rancho Mirage, California, Chase’s projects extended beyond his signature residential work to include aircraft, yachts and homes in such far-off lands as Singapore and Germany. We are so proud to offer this original work of art by legendary Palm Springs artist O. E. L. Graves. We discovered his work when we first purchased a second home here in 1997. His work was very difficult to come across, but stories about Mr. Graves were legendary, and the first art we saw of his were his extraordinary and very collectible cover art for vintage mid century Palm Springs villager magazines which we found at some thrift stores! We have since collected 8 original paintings. This is the Rolls-Royce of the collection. His artwork is now collected by a new generation of the Palm Springs younger rich and famous entertainment industry that have brought new life to the town with Coachella Music Festival and the endearing architecture Palm Springs is famous for! We purchased an amazing coffee table book by French photographer Robert Doisneau called “Palm Springs 1960” Mr Graves himself and his artwork is featured in wonderful 1960s vintage photographs. This spurred on more collectors looking for his paintings. This large painting was definitely owned by a Palm Springs/Beverly Hills client. His work was even sought out by Rockefeller that wanted to buy a painting of Mr. Graves that he refused to sell! The paintings were very expensive. Just the original painting’s framing alone shows how chic and special it was. The subject is a bird in its cage with a clock in the corner, In shades of silver, green, black and gold. There is a name on the painting, along side Mr. Graves signature we believe to be the title of the painting, “Orsi” It is such an extraordinary painting! O. E. L. Graves (1897 - 1971)
Graves was an American artist and painter/sculptor based in Palm Springs, California during Hollywood's golden years. His client list included many of the rich and famous of his era, from movie stars (Clark Gable, Bob Hope, Bing Crosby, Janet Gaynor) to business magnates (Raymond Loewys, George R. Hearst Sr.) to shady criminal kingpins. His own personal life was just as full of high intrigue and secrecy as the famous clients he cultivated. As a result, his need to maintain a relatively low profile in his private life has relegated him to near obscurity in death as an artist.
Graves experimented constantly with new media and techniques for expressing his art. His works include delicate watercolors, fine detailed portraits, impressionistic oils, sculptures in metal, and some techniques of his own invention. Graves claims to have invented "sculpted oil painting", where multiple layers of thick oil paint are placed on masonite and then cut away to create the image. His sculpted oil paintings were displayed in some of the trendiest galleries and art museums, including the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art, which purchased some of his sculpted paintings after they had been shown there. PLEASE NOTE: This photograph is a one of a kind original photograph. Every photograph in the show was available to purchase, and only one of each was printed. This large black and white hand printed silver gelatin photograph of "Michel Nude" by the legendary fashion icon, Michael Roberts, London. This image was part of a Michael Roberts show in 1989 at Hamilton's gallery, London. Signed on back. Black metal simple frame. Image: 15" x 19", framed: 22' x 26".
This image is one of two that were in the gallery show in London. The images from the show were very rare and now highly sought after and collected after Mr. Robert's death but there are NONE available to purchase. These two images were purchased from that Exhibit from Hamiltons. The second one, "Nude of Michel" is available on separate listing. We hope they are purchased together as they were hung next to each other in the exhibit.
MICHAEL ROBERTS:
The preferred medium of the fashion journalist Michael Roberts was Canson art paper, which he scissored freehand into crisp-cut collages, or snipped into minute dots to reassemble into mosaics, for magazine covers or book illustrations. His art, bit by bit putting it together, reflected his life in fashion. He wrote about it, commissioned unexpected others to do so, photographed for media and ads, and charmed cranky legendary lensmen into snapping for him. He could source the clothes, choose the crazy locale, stage the shoot’s story, and write a witty critique of the enterprise. He was also always the most elegant person involved, effortlessly cool.
Roberts, who has died aged 75, never bothered with a résumé, since every new role or venture seemed to just develop, but they totted up to a serious career. He was a writer on the Sunday Times in the 1970s, when new couture catwalk drama and heightened designer celebrity demanded a fashion voice that was both theatre critic and gossip columnist. Then from 1979 he was art and style director of Tatler magazine, when the editor, Tina Brown...

He is nude underneath and although subtle, it is a nude. Michel was a high fashion male model thet Michael Roberts adored and used him for many fashion campains for Joeph's London. This image was in the gallery show in London.The images from the show are very rare and now highly sought after and collected after Mr. Robert's death. two images were purchased from that Exhibit. The second one, "Nude of Michel" is available on separate listing. We hope they are purchased together as they were hung next to each other in the exhibit.
MICHAEL ROBERTS:
The preferred medium of the fashion journalist Michael Roberts was Canson art paper, which he scissored freehand into crisp-cut collages, or snipped into minute dots to reassemble into mosaics, for magazine covers or book illustrations. His art, bit by bit putting it together, reflected his life in fashion. He wrote about it, commissioned unexpected others to do so, photographed for media and ads, and charmed cranky legendary lensmen into snapping for him. He could source the clothes, choose the crazy locale, stage the shoot’s story, and write a witty critique of the enterprise. He was also always the most elegant person involved, effortlessly cool.
Roberts, who has died aged 75, never bothered with a résumé, since every new role or venture seemed to just develop, but they totted up to a serious career. He was a writer on the Sunday Times in the 1970s, when new couture catwalk drama and heightened designer celebrity demanded a fashion voice that was both theatre critic and gossip columnist.
