1970s Documented Jean Varon Black Spider Cobweb Dress
By Jean Varon
Located in London, GB
Fine and rare Jean Varon spider cobweb dress which can be dated to the designer's 1973 collection and featured here in the September issue of British Vogue. Fashioned in a sleek black jersey with a slight sheen, it has faceted-domed glass buttons down the front and around the wide cuff billow sleeves. It has a half-length front hidden zip for ease of access. The embroidered tulle panel on the back with applications of beads and sequins forming spiders crawling around cobwebs and has made this dress the most prized of all John Bate's designs. They rarely come up for sale; this has been in Circa's collection nearly 20 years and is notably held in several fashion museums worldwide. In fabulous vintage condition with absolutely no issues and is worthy of museum acquisition. The only thing if we're being very, very picky is that there are two tiny pin holes on the back near the right-hand seam; absolutely impossible to see when worn and only noticed when the dress was held to the light. It is best for a size UK 8 or US 4 and smaller on account of the small waist. Notes on Designer: John Bates was a highly regarded British designer who began his label Jean Varon in 1959. Famous for sheer panels, short hemlines and bare midriffs, he was one of the pioneers of the miniskirt and trousers for women...

Many watch lovers believe that Hublot is worth it. Named after the French word for “porthole,” the Hublot, which debuted at the 1980 Baselworld watch and jewelry trade show, did indeed look like a porthole. What made the watch stand out, however, was its radical “fusion” approach to design — that is, the combination of a complex gold case with a band made from rubber. At the time, most high-end watches featured wristbands crafted from luxury materials, so the humble rubber material was a radical shift from fashion trends.

In 2004, watchmaker Jean-Claude Biver became CEO of the company, pushing the brand into the 21st century, including through major collaborations with athletes like sprinter Usain Bolt and artists like Shepard Fairey. In 2005, Hublot launched the Big Bang watch, a fresh statement on the brand’s inventive mixing of tradition and technology with options ranging from gold and a tire-tread-like rubber to a sapphire crystal casing. Other models include the Classic Fusion in 2008, which recalls the 1980s design, and the Manufacture Pieces (MP) collection, which features complex movements. The luxury Swiss watch company continues to innovate while staying true to its “art of fusion” roots.

However, whether or not it’s worth investing in Hublot is totally subjective! At 1stDibs, we believe in buying what you love. Our shopping experience enables discovery and learning, whether you are a seasoned connoisseur or just beginning your collection.

Find Hublot watches and other watches on 1stDibs.

What sculpture is worth the most will vary over time as pieces continue to come up for auction and break existing records. Some of the most expensive sculptures ever sold at auction include Alberto Giacometti pieces. Many watch lovers believe that the Calatrava is worth it. The Calatrava collection launched in 1932 and has remained in the catalogue ever since. It has endured because of its timeless design, an aesthetic epitomized by the reference 3919. Graff is known for handling some of the most famous diamonds in the world, including the Windsor Yellows, the Paragon, the Lesotho Promise and the Wittelsbach-Graff. Naturally, diamonds are featured prominently in Graff jewelry, which is known for being more avant-garde, although Graff creates classic pieces, too. What a cloisonné piece is worth will depend on what type of piece it is, its condition, rarity and more.

Cloisonné (“cell” in French) is a technique in which thin wires of fine silver or gold are used to outline a design, which is then filled with enamel. The piece is subsequently placed in a kiln where the enamel is melted. Cloisonné is distinct because the individual wires remain visible, forming an outline of the motif. When it comes to jewelry design and other disciplines, cloisonné enamel was popular during the Byzantine Empire

Collectors of authentic antique Chinese furniture and decorative objects know that Ming dynasty-era cloisonné objects are particularly coveted. Although ornamentation was minimal at the time, Ming dynasty furniture often featured carved or painted details of flowers, insects, dragons, fruits and other motifs.

As overseas trade expanded, techniques from the West, like cloisonné enamel painting, adorned table screens and other pieces. With respect to Ming-era cloisonné objects and furnishings, an elaborately decorated item featuring lots of vibrant colors and details is likely to be more valuable at auction than its minimally adorned counterpart (the same goes for Victorian cloisonné objects). Chinese cloisonné vases created during the Ming and Qing eras represent a golden age of Chinese furniture design.

Chinese cloisonné objects were frequently imported to Japan, where the technique wasn’t adopted until the 1800s. Although it was a time of societal and cultural shifts, a bolstered interest in art and design elevated Japanese craft traditions during the Meiji era, and today, Meiji-era cloisonné vases or incense burners in good condition are of great interest to collectors.

Find antique and vintage cloisonné objects on 1stDibs.

Many furniture lovers and interior designers believe a leather couch is worth it. Although full-grain and top-grain leather upholstery generally costs more than faux leather and textiles, high-quality leather gives a couch a sumptuous feel and elevated appearance. Premium leathers also resist wear and can be easily wiped clean. However, whether or not it's worth buying a leather couch is subjective. At 1stDibs, we believe in buying what you love. Our shopping experience enables discovery and learning, whether you are a seasoned connoisseur or just beginning your collection. On 1stDibs, shop a variety of leather sofas and other furniture.

Yes, some Victrolas are worth something. In particular, rare models often fetch high prices. An example is the Victor VV-XVI in Circassian walnut, which is extremely rare. Overall, the age, type and style will determine the price, and Victrolas tend to be worth more when they are still in good working order. To get an estimated value for your Victrola, have a certified appraiser or experienced antique dealer evaluate it for you. On 1stDibs, find a variety of Victrolas.

Many watch lovers believe that A. Lange & Söhne is worth it. With a watchmaking legacy that has its origins in the early 19th century, German brand A. Lange & Söhne has created a wide range of iconic watches and is renowned around the world for its chronographs and impeccably polished and elegant aesthetics. In 1994, the company debuted its first wristwatch collection, which included the Lange 1, Saxonia, Arkade and Tourbillon “Pour le Mérite” models. Subsequently, other successful models followed, such as Odysseus, Cabaret, Zeitwerk and the iconic 1815, named for founder Ferdinand Adolph Lange’s birth year. Many watch lovers believe that Piaget watches are worth it. Undoubtedly, the luxury watchmaker has a long and rich history.

The Piaget family name was trademarked in 1943, and a large manufacturing facility was established in La Côte-aux-Fées, Switzerland. There they would perfect one of their signatures: ultra-thin movements. In 1959, the Salon Piaget opened in Geneva, where Piaget also set up workshops for goldsmithing and gem setting, establishing a creative hub where artisans were encouraged to push the boundaries of their designs. In 1963, Piaget released its first collection of watches with ornamental stones set into their dials. The brand's stone-dial watches are undeniable classics of watchmaking. These artful creations caught the eye of such storied tastemakers as Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, Elizabeth Taylor, Andy Warhol and Sophia Loren.

However, whether or not it’s worth investing in Piaget watches is totally subjective! At 1stDibs, we believe in buying what you love. Our shopping experience enables discovery and learning, whether you are a seasoned connoisseur or just beginning your collection.
