Waring & Gillow Desks and Writing Tables
British
Historic furniture manufacturing company Waring & Gillow Ltd. was at the forefront of luxury English furnishings for the better part of a century. Having furnished era-defining ocean liners — including the RMS Lusitania and HMS Queen Mary — the company’s name was synonymous with prestige.
It began as an informal partnership between English furniture companies Gillows of Lancaster and Warings of Liverpool. Gillows had built a reputation in the 18th and early 19th centuries by providing high-end furniture to some of the country’s wealthiest families. In the 19th century, the Waring company had supplied furniture to major hotels and public buildings across Europe.
The two companies formally merged in 1903, becoming Waring & Gillow. With this combined expertise, the company flourished for decades. During the world wars, Waring & Gillow converted their factories to produce protective clothing, glider wings and ammunition chests, among many other products.
In 1953, retail conglomerate Great Universal Stores acquired the company and kept the Waring & Gillow name. In 1960, Great Universal Stores sold off a large share of the operation to the John Peters furniture retailer, while maintaining some of its manufacturing facilities.
In the 1980s, Waring & Gillow was merged with furniture company Maple and Co. and rebranded as Maple, Waring and Gillow. The spirit of the original Waring & Gillow companies still resonated in the sophisticated designs and quality manufacturing.

Executive desk formerly belonging to noted architect George M. Notter, (1933–2007) of the Boston firm Anderson Notter Finegold (now known as Finegold Alexander Architects).
Current institutional memory at the firm suggests it was a special order from Herman Miller for the then new New York offices of MGM, however Herman Miller's archivist was unable to confirm.
Styling, particularly the distinctive slim milled aluminum tracks through which the entire drawer carriage glides is clearly similar to Warren Platner's designs for Lehigh-Leopold which were then among the most costly of executive office furnishings. The bent flat bar chromed steel base with its distinctive pigeon toe splay is somewhat similar to a table base in Stow Davis' Electa Series, designed by Alexis Yermakov circa 1971. Walnut laminate top is very clean with no issues. One one corner edge shows a small separation.
The only identifying markings are within the milled aluminum channel:

Between the rectangular laminate top and the chrome base is a heavy blackened steel plate. Underneath the bent chrome pigeon toe feet are bars of a thick phenolic material which act as floor protector.

All handcrafted by one of the greatest furniture designers and makers from England, the sheer presence of this unique desk will instantly change the atmosphere of the room she is in. Nowadays most people would rather read, study or search for something online behind a desk, but we hope this one of a kind antique will go to a hopeful romantic who still sits down and writes personal messages to loved ones. This Georgian Style desk is a great example of the finest workmanship around the turn of the century and we were not surprised to find the maker's name plate (on the inside of the drawer) of Waring and Gillow (since 1695). A name that needs no further introduction. The elegant legs are made of solid walnut and the stylishly rounded top half of this desk is beautifully inlaid with burl walnut. The two tone color makes its grand design even more impressive and desirable.
