Questions About Vionnet

Madeleine Vionnet created two innovations that would revolutionize women's fashion. The first is the bias cut, the practice of cutting fabric at a 45-degree angle to its grain to enhance its stretch and allow it to flow more freely. In addition, Vionnet pioneered new draping methods, reducing the number of seams and fastening needed to produce a dress. On 1stDibs, find a large selection of vintage apparel and accessories.

The designer Madeleine Vionnet was known for a few innovations. Perhaps her most important contribution to fashion was the bias cut, a method of cutting fabric across the grain at a diagonal to enhance the draping properties of a garment. She also revolutionized fashion by introducing more fluid silhouettes, such as evening gowns inspired by the flowing tunics of ancient Greece. This approach allowed women to abandon the restrictive undergarments of the era, such as corsets. In this way, Vionnet was ahead of her time in terms of championing women's comfort when developing fashion designs. On 1stDibs, shop an assortment of vintage apparel and accessories.
