"Icarus and Daedalus, " Rare Art Deco Relief Sculpture w/ Male Nudes, 1936 Sweden
By Ulla Fogelklou-Skogh 1
Located in Philadelphia, PA
Sculpted by important Swedish artist, Ulla Fogelklou-Skogh, and crisply cast in iron by Ystad Metall in 1936, this highly rare sundial features -- appropriately -- Daedalus and his son Icarus, famed for their joint attempt to escape Crete in mythological times using wax wings crafted by the father. This sundial was featured at the 1937 Paris World Exposition ("Exposition Internationale des arts et techniques dans la vie moderne" in French). A few years earlier, the artist worked at a renowned silversmith, Atelier Borgila, and in 1948, she designed a set of sandblasted glass windows and a staircase hall mirror for an ocean liner, the M/S Stockholm, the pride of the Swedish American Line...
