Rookwood Pottery Nasturtium Vellum Vase, Signed Sallie Coyne
By Rookwood Pottery Co., Sarah Elizabeth Coyne
Located in Cincinnati, OH
This Rookwood Pottery shaded vellum vase was hand painted by artist Sarah ''Sallie'' Elizabeth Coyne (1876-1939) in 1928. The piece has a nasturtium motif and has been finished in a matte glaze.
Rookwood Pottery is recognized as one of the preeminent producers of fine art pottery in the world. Founded in 1880, Rookwood's artisans experimented with new techniques and glazes, developing their own distinctive style and creating pieces that are highly sought after by collectors today.
This vase has a traditional ovoid form with a high shoulder and was decorated by Sarah ''Sallie'' Elizabeth Coyne, 20th century painter and printmaker who studied at the Cincinnati Art Academy. Coyne worked for Rookwood from 1891-1936, and is recognized for her soft impressionistic style.
This signed Coyne vase features muted gradient coloration which transitions from a peach color at the base to a deep rose hue. The piece has a mottled blue neck and rim showing hints of the rose coloring beneath. The shoulder of the vase is encircled with a floral motif consisting of three large nasturtium blossoms interspersed with green foliage. The image has a pleasing watery quality with hazy outlines that bleed into its surroundings and is characteristic of Rookwood's sought after vellum glaze.
The vase is in excellent original condition with no damage or restoration. The piece is free of crazing and appears as it did when created nearly 100 years ago. The foot has production related stilt marks from the kiln and bears the impressed Rookwood "RP" flame logo...
