Antique Rookwood Pottery Hand Painted Vessel Gorham Engraved Silver Decoration
By Rookwood Pottery Co., Gorham
Located in Cincinnati, OH
This late 19th century glazed earthenware mug was crafted in the studios of Cincinnati Ohio's renowned Rookwood Pottery Company and has a traditional form with an ear-shaped handle having a thumb rest. The exterior of the piece is finished in standard glaze and features hand painted decoration executed by highly regarded artist William Purcell McDonald (1864-1931). The decor has an appealing wine harvest theme consisting of grape vines that snake across the surface. The vines are studded with leaves in various shades of green along with two dangling clusters of plump reddish grapes. McDonald's application of paint is slightly raised in places giving the image a dimensional quality.
The mug is further ornamented with an ornate silver overlay manufactured by Gorham. The silver decoration covers the handle and rim and includes a series of large etched foliate scrolls and flowers that extend across the body. There is also an eye-catching latticed area that provides a strong visual contrast with the gentle curving motifs found on the other parts of the silver overlay.
The underside of the mug has an impressed RP mark along with shape 422 and the letter W. It also carries the incised initials of the artist - W. P. McD - and the letter L. The underside of the silver foot rim is stamped Gorham Manufacturing Co. along with a hand engraved mark reading S 1274 S.

Early Davenport Ironstone Mug Hand Painted Chinoiserie Pattern 659, circa 1815
By Davenport Porcelain
Located in Lincoln, Lincolnshire
This is a rare and early stone China (Ironstone) mug which dates to the George 111 period, circa 1815 made by the Davenport factory of Longport, Staffordshire Potteries, England.
The mug is straight sided similar to a coffee can and has a loop handle with an upper thumb rest.
The pattern is number "659", which is one of Davenport's very few chinoiserie patterns.
The bold pattern features striking polychrome enamels of rocks and different flowers all in the Chinoiserie style, hand painted over-glaze in different colours over an under-glaze blue printed outline. The pattern is embellished with good hand gilding. There is also a deep border pattern to the inside rim which replicates the outer mug pattern with sprigs of hand painted flowers.
The mark on the base of the mug is Godden's 1183, a blue printed DAVENPORT STONE CHINA...

Pair of Petite Rookwood Pottery Arts & Crafts Vases 1 Sea Green and 1 Turquoise
By Rookwood Pottery Co.
Located in Topeka, KS
Handsome pair of petite Rookwood Pottery Arts & Craft vases. One is sea green and one is turquoise. They are both in excellent vintage condition. No chips, cracks, chiggers, or crazing that we have detected and very little wear to their bottoms. Please see photos. Circa 1920s.
Wow! These are exceptional examples of Rookwood Arts & Craft Pottery. These two beautiful vases have been together for a long time, so we are selling them as a pair. One is in a sea green gloss glaze and date marked 1928 with form number 2963. This one is a long neck bottle shaped vase that is void of decoration letting its Classic Silhouette be the star. The second one has a turquoise matte glaze and is date marked 1922 with form number 2283. It has a bulbous urn shape with a band of incised geometric design around the lower third of its body. Both are in fabulous condition and will be lovely on a shelf or in a table-scape.
Rookwood Pottery was founded in 1880 by Maria Longworth Nichols and has the unique distinction of being the first manufacturing company in the United States founded by a female. It is also known for having many women artists on staff over its long lifespan. The name Rookwood was Maria’s brainchild after noticing the rooks, or crows, populating her father’s estate and combining that with “wood” for a nod to the fame Wedgwood wares. Maria ran the company for three years. Then in 1883, after she attained much success in earning medals for the company’s work, she turned over the management of and transferred her interest in the company to William W. Taylor. Under Taylors command the business went from a young award-winning pottery company to a thriving entity. It was a very successful operation over the following decades. But in 1941, after the Great Depression took its toll, Taylor closed-up shop. Until a brief few years later a group of investors bought the company and began production once again. The new Rookwood changed hands many times and even moved to a different state but could still never be the pottery it once was. They subsequently closed their doors for good in 1967.
Whether you are a collector of Arts & Crafts pottery or Rookwood in particular…or you just love beautiful things….you need to make this pair yours.

Rookwood Pottery Nasturtium Vellum Vase, Signed Sallie Coyne
By Rookwood Pottery Co., Sarah Elizabeth Coyne
Located in Cincinnati, OH
This Rookwood Pottery shaded vellum vase was hand painted by artist Sarah ''Sallie'' Elizabeth Coyne (1876-1939) in 1928. The piece has a nasturtium motif and has been finished in a matte glaze.
Rookwood Pottery is recognized as one of the preeminent producers of fine art pottery in the world. Founded in 1880, Rookwood's artisans experimented with new techniques and glazes, developing their own distinctive style and creating pieces that are highly sought after by collectors today.
This vase has a traditional ovoid form with a high shoulder and was decorated by Sarah ''Sallie'' Elizabeth Coyne, 20th century painter and printmaker who studied at the Cincinnati Art Academy. Coyne worked for Rookwood from 1891-1936, and is recognized for her soft impressionistic style.
This signed Coyne vase features muted gradient coloration which transitions from a peach color at the base to a deep rose hue. The piece has a mottled blue neck and rim showing hints of the rose coloring beneath. The shoulder of the vase is encircled with a floral motif consisting of three large nasturtium blossoms interspersed with green foliage. The image has a pleasing watery quality with hazy outlines that bleed into its surroundings and is characteristic of Rookwood's sought after vellum glaze.
The vase is in excellent original condition with no damage or restoration. The piece is free of crazing and appears as it did when created nearly 100 years ago. The foot has production related stilt marks from the kiln and bears the impressed Rookwood "RP" flame logo...
