Rare pair of bronze sculptures by Emile Herbért. Fine quality silvered and gilt bronze figures of a warrior woman and a poet women dressed accordingly with military attire and poetic words. Signed and foundry marked with the G. Servant mark.
Pierre-Eugène-Emile Hébert, French, (1828 - 1893).
A native Parisian, Hébert apparently lived and worked in the capital until his death. He was born in 1828, and studied sculpture privately, with his father Pierre (1804-1869) and Jean-Jacques Feuchère (1807-1852), both of whom pursued modestly successful careers in the Salon and as public sculptors beginning in the 1830s. Hébert learned extensively from their very divergent paths. Whereas Pierre Hébert...

Important Pair of Belle Epoque Bronze Candelabras w Frog Sculptures by H. Picard
By Henri Picard
Located in Lisse, NL
Truly unique pair of gilt bronze table candelabras by Henri Picard of Paris, France.
These amazingly sculptural antique candelabras for more than one reason have the wow factor. First of all, they are made by one of the most famous and celebrated metal workers and 'fondeurs' of mid 19th century Paris. This artisan was commissioned by many important 'patrons', but Henri Picard’s most notable achievement was to supply Napoleon 3rd with various decorative antiques, some of which are still in the State Apartment of the Louvre Museum. The second reason why these candelabras are in a league of their own is the subject matter. Almost all Belle Epoque antiques have classical-world subject matters, but this pair clearly is different and it is this difference that makes this pair even more unique and remarkable. It is almost as if Henri Picard had already caught a glimpse of what was to come three or four decades later. We say so, because the subject matter (with animals and lotus or lily leafs and their organic design) is almost Art Nouveau and Arts and Crafts in style. At the base of each of these candelabras are three endearing frog sculptures crouching under lotus leafs. A little further up the stem are a snail, a fly and a beetle sculpture, three creatures that regularly are on the frogs menu. And with the importance of frogs in French culture these candelabras also are of cultural historical significance. The third reason why we believe these works of art are of museum quality are the details. Besides the amphibian, mollusk and insects sculptures, you simply cannot overlook the remarkable details in the leafs, the branches and the floral decorations. They are of a quality and beauty that will make people want to stop, to look at and to study them. Like they would in a museum. Even all the original and removable bobeches AND the two bronze candle extinguishers...

Bronze Sculpture "Oedipus and Sphinx" after Pierre Emile Hebert, French c 1870
By Pierre-Eugène-Émile Hébert
Located in Shippensburg, PA
The modeling of this cast is particularly interesting, with the model somewhat unclear as to whether he is lifting the covering to reveal the Sphinx or is lowering the fabric to hide her away. Hébert's chosen proportions suggest she is being hidden, being put away. The ferocious adversary of the Thebes is nearly reduced to a household pet in dimension; she is rigid and static, modeled like a statue rather than as a living being while Oedipus is a vibrant image of life. It is prophetic as Oedipus lowers the fabric over the eyes of Sphinx of the self-inflicted blindness awaiting him.
An exceedingly fine cast by the foundry of Georges Servant, the figural group is finished in an overall dark brown surface patination with hints of warmer golden browns and red oxide below the surface. Conceived in 1869, this cast was executed subsequently by Servant and is sealed on the base "G&S / Medaille D'Or / 1867". Note the exquisite treatment of the surface with intricate chiseling, filing and textured hammering throughout.
Georges Servant exhibited extensively, including at the 1855 Paris Exhibition and the London Exhibitions of 1862 and 1867, winning in the latter the gold medallion referenced in the markings of his work. While Hébert worked with numerous foundries throughout his career, his partnership with Servant was apparently the most productive and long-standing, having a significant portion of his output produced in the Servant foundry both as serial casts and as models to surmount clocks. They also partnered together for somewhat limited production of bronze sculpture to decorate furnishings.

Egyptian Revival Antique Bronze Sculpture Clock of "Isis" by Pierre Emile Hebert
By Georges Emile Henri Servant, Pierre-Eugène-Émile Hébert
Located in Shippensburg, PA
An incredibly fine casting of Isis, this coveted model is a rare find on the open market. The queen is depicted with a cool and calm demeanor, her eyes betraying no emotion or sentiment as she looks to an infinite point in the distance. Her attire is regal with a golden crown stylized as a bird and a vast choker necklace with incised designs and tear-drop embellishments being finished in brilliant gold while the rest of her body is patinated in near black. The casting quality is typical of Servant with extraordinary care shown to even the slightest details, perfect skin and surfaces throughout, crisp eyelids and minute jeweler-grade incised detailing.
The bust was retailed in many different configurations - set over a clock, standing alone as a bronze, standing alone as a bronze over an angular marble base and as a pair of bronze busts set over marble bases together with her pharaoh Ramses. The present model surmounts its original mantel clock, this a distinctly neoclassical trapezoidal form with stepped levels of alternating sienna marble and Egyptian black marble, the overall body being finished in the sienna marble with deep incised lines set at equal intervals around the black marble clock face gilt-incised with opposing Phoenix birds. The original movement is sealed with the Japy Freres marking and retains its original pendulum, though it has not been tested for operation, accuracy or duration.
