Wonderful set of six upholstered Mid-Century Modern dining chairs by Morris of California from their Architectural Modern collection. There are two armchairs and four side chairs. All are in exceptional original vintage condition circa 1940s-1950s.
Just look at these fabulous midcentury modern dining chairs. Such great lines and very comfortable. Made with great attention to detail they look incredible from every direction. Covered in their original brown and cream nubby tweed-like fabric, which is in excellent condition, the inside backs are channeled and framed by the outside backs. The pattern of the fabric gives a horizontal effect that is very pleasing. The arm chairs are created by the addition of an angled fully upholstered arm applied to the original slipper style side chair. Very appealing. Each chair held up by four walnut square splayed legs. Exceptional! The Architectural Modern Collection was produced by Morris of California roughly from 1948 to 1955. A dash might replace the hours of 3, 6, and 9 — instead of the comparatively unexciting numerical representation — and an inverted triangle might be used to represent the hour of 12. On 1stDibs, find a variety of antique, modern and contemporary watches.
- Who invented California dial?1 Answer1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022The California dial likely originated in the 1930s because Californians loved mixing Roman and Arabic numbers. - 1stDibs ExpertAugust 26, 2024The difference between a Morris chair and a Stickley chair comes down to origins and characteristics. A Morris chair gets its name from William Morris, one of the founders of the British company Morris, Marshall, Faulkner & Co. During the late 1860s, the company began producing the Morris chair, which has a reclining seat back and an intricately carved wood frame. This design spread to the U.S., where it was seen by Gustav Stickley. Drawing inspiration from it, Stickley produced the Stickley chair in 1904. Like the Morris chair, the piece has a reclining back but a simpler slatted frame that aligns with the American Arts and Crafts design style. Due to its origins, some people call the Stickley chair the Stickley Morris chair or the Mission Morris chair. Explore a collection of Stickley chairs and Morris chairs on 1stDibs.
