This early Rookwood Pottery Dull Finish vase was decorated by highly regarded artist Matthew Andrew Daly (1860-1937). The vase has an ovoid body with a narrow neck that flares out to terminate in a wide rim. The Sage Green clay body features a pair of hand painted sparrows flying amongst long feathery stalks of grass. The decoration includes fired on gold highlights and gilding at the rim. The glaze itself is a lovely shade of blue/gray that transitions to a warm peach color at the shoulder. The inside of the neck is also finished in peach. The underside of the vase is fully and properly marked reading ROOKWOOD, 1885, with shape number 241, and G indicating Sage Green clay. It also carries Daly's initials "M.A.D.".
