Kate Brinkworth Still-life Paintings
British
Kate Brinkworth undertook her artistic training at Nottingham Trent University. Finding intrigue in the use of camera angles and techniques she is particularly inspired by effects created by the manipulation of focus. Though her paintings are not intended to imitate a photograph Brinkworth’s style uses the language of film and photography to create these unique images. After completing her studies in 2000 she rapidly began exhibiting work, her first major solo show taking place in 2001 at Britart Gallery, London. Her work has since been exhibited widely throughout the UK and North America.
Brinkworth’s work stems from her curiosity of films, particularly those directed by or in the style of Hitchcock. Painted in varying degrees of focus Brinkworth highlights the focal subjects in each piece whilst the blurred areas are left subtly alluring. Introducing narrative to her work, the subjects are suggestive of a place and time and encourage the viewer to create their own story based on personal interpretationto

Kate Brinkworth undertook her artistic training at Nottingham Trent University, and graduated in 2000 with first class honours. She rapidly began exhibiting her work, and her first major solo show took place in 2001 at Britart Gallery, London. Her success led to further exhibitions across the country and abroad, and she began featuring regularly in several international art fairs and won numerous awards. These include the Westgate Prize (2004), and a commission from GUS headquarters in Mayfair.
Kate Brinkworth's painting stems from her curiosity in films, particularly those directed by or in the style of Hitchcock. She is particularly inspired by effects created though experimentation with focus, and repeatedly photographs her still lifes with various shutter speeds, camera angles and lighting to find the optimum composition. Brinkworth's style uses the language of film, advertising and photography to create these unique images; her visits to Las Vegas have developed her interest in the representation of objects associated with vice. Painted in varying degrees of focus, her expert technique deceives the viewer into believing the work is a photograph, due to the realism of her subject matter and style, and the thin application of paint which gives a smooth, glossy finish. It is only on closer inspection that the viewer realises the work is entirely painted by hand.
Brinkworth's works challenge our perceptions of the image; in our contemporary world inundated with visual stimuli, she painstakingly labours over her compositions to make us look at these familiar objects in a new way. In a parallel challenge to contemporary conventions her technique mirrors the Renaissance mural technique of the 'cartoon', a drawing which would be pricked along the lines and dusted with charcoal to transfer the skeleton of the image to the wall. Brinkworth similarly maps out her photographs onto both sides of sheets of paper and rubs the reverse to move the image onto the canvas. Once the composition is mapped out, she begins working into the picture in oil using her distinctive technique.

This painting, "French Interior with Statues", radiates elegance and a strong sense of place. The artist has masterfully conveyed the sophistication of a French interior, blending architectural depth, light, and intricate details with expressive, painterly techniques.
The composition draws the viewer’s eye through a series of framed spaces: an open door, a corridor, and a distant room. This layering technique creates a sense of depth and invites the viewer to explore the scene step by step. The checkerboard...

Lily Pond at Pana'ewa / oil on canvas painting - 36 x 24 inches
By Peter Loftus
Located in Burlingame, CA
Tranquil tropical lily pond by American Realist nature scene oil painter Peter Loftus who is known for captivating color rich scenes through shadow and light through his oil on canvas paintings that breathe life while reflecting natural western and Hawaiian environments. Lotus's subject matter includes oceans, mountains, babbling brooks, mountain ridges and vistas, as well as people and figures. This beautiful oil painting glows with cool tranquil waters reflecting the tropical palm trees on a pool of floating lotus pads.
Peter Loftus was born in 1948, in Washington DC. He received a BFA in painting from the Maryland Institute College of Art, in 1971. In 1974, Loftus earned an MFA from the University of Pennsylvania. Drawn by the glorious California light, Loftus moved to Santa Cruz in 1975. He has lived and painted there ever since. Loftus taught at both University of California at Santa Cruz and Cabrillo Community College between 1975, through the present (at UCSC). He taught Beginning, Intermediate and Advanced Drawing, and Painting, in both oil and aqueous media.
During that time, he also sustained a rigorous exhibition schedule, showing regularly on the East and West coasts; in New York at Fischbach Gallery, and San Francisco at William Sawyer Gallery and later Hackett-Freedman Gallery. In addition, Loftus has participated in a number of group exhibitions. These include: American Realism: 20th Century Drawings and Watercolors (and accompanying book), San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, New Horizons in American Realism: Flint Institute of Arts, Flint, MI. Loftus is also included in several publications, including: "The Artist as Native: Reinventing Regionalism" by Alan Gussow...
