JANE ADAMS , whose son Bryan is an iconic Rock superstar of the 1980's and 90's, was born in Vancouver and began to show an interest in the visual arts while still a young child. Her first studies in England took place in 1961-62 when she enrolled at the Chelsea School of Art; her teachers there included LAWRENCE GOWING and ELIZABETH FRINK. Then, from 1962 until her graduation in 1966, she was a student at the Vancouver School of Art (now Emily Carr University) where she studied with JACK SHADBOLT, DON JARVIS, ROY KIYOOKA and ORVILLE FISHER. By the mid-1960s Adams had already received encouraging recognition for her work. She participated in a number of group shows at the University of British Columbia, the Vancouver Art Gallery, the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria and the Bau-Xi Gallery. In 1965 she was awarded the staff scholarship from the Vancouver School of Art, and during her final year there one of her works on paper was chosen for the University of Victoria Purchase Award.
During a second study year in London in 1965, she came to the attention of British painter WILLIAM TOWNSEND, who invited her to work under his direction at the Slade School of Art. During these final London years Adams continued to win awards and scholarships, including a Leon and Thea Koerner Foundation Grant in 1967 and a Canada Council bursary the following season.
Adams' first solo exhibition took place in 1973 at the Bau-Xi Gallery in Vancouver. She has since had a long series of shows across Canada, the most recent in 2009 at the Elliott Louis Gallery in Vancouver. From 1969 until 1972 she received four grants from the Canada Council and a number of works were purchased by corporate, private and public collections (including the National Art Bank). More recently her work has been featured in the corporate collections of Royal Trust, Price Waterhouse, BCAA, Lawson-Lundell, Vancouver General Hospital, Teleglobe Canada, Union Life, Via Rail, Esso Resources, the Delta Hotel in Montreal, Hotel Manoir in St. Sauveur, Quebec, the Georgian Court Hotel, Waterfront Hotel in Vancouver, Intrawest Palm Springs, Chateau Whistler and the Jasper Park...
