Jaeger-LeCoultre Objets d'Art and Vertu

Swiss

The exquisite art of watchmaking is on display in the distinctive designs of Jaeger-LeCoultre. The Swiss manufacturer is celebrated for its striking Art Deco–era antique clocks, while its range of sumptuous luxury watches spans the gamut of modern design, each one a time capsule of its period.

Jaeger-LeCoultre was established in 1833 by watchmaker Antoine LeCoultre in the Vallée de Joux of the Swiss mountains. LeCoultre was also an inventor who, in 1844, created the millionomètre. As the first instrument to measure thousandths of a millimeter with total accuracy, it refined the meticulous watchmaking process. By 1866, LeCoultre's son, Elie LeCoultre, took over the business. He revolutionized watchmaking by bringing all 180 skills involved in the trade into one workshop: LeCoultre & Cie Manufacture.

By 1903, the company had passed to Antoine LeCoultre's grandson, Jacques-David LeCoultre. He created a signature line of ultra-thin watches in partnership with Edmond Jaeger, a French watchmaker who specialized in flat watch cases. In 1907, Louis Cartier signed a contract with Jaeger so that Cartier would have movements for its popular timepieces produced exclusively at LeCoultre in Switzerland. This era saw the debut of Cartier’s Santos as well as its Tank watch.

Watchmakers at Jaeger-LeCoultre began to experiment with the Art Deco style that had encompassed the 1920s and the 1930s. At the time, there were many influences that led to the creation of Art Deco jewelry, while the cases of Art Deco clocks featured architectural details and saw an integration of materials such as brass, glass and marble. Iconic Jaeger-LeCoultre designs from this era include the 1928 Atmos clock and the Reverso watch. Stylish and practical, the coveted Reverso watch features a case that you can flip to protect the watch face.

During the 1950s and '60s, Jaeger-LeCoultre watchmakers continued the manufacturer’s tradition of prioritizing practical reliability. In 1958, the company introduced the robust and durable Geophysic watch collection. The Memovox Polaris, an alarm-equipped dive watch one could wear underwater, followed in 1968.

The best-known timepiece in the company's modern collection is the Master Control watch, unveiled in 1992. It symbolizes a return to the thin style and performance-first ethic of classic Jaeger-LeCoultre. In 2018, the watchmaker also launched the Polaris collection. Inspired by the original Memovox, the series features a sporty, elegant and contemporary look.

Jaeger LeCoultre Bracket Watch “Atmos Vendome” Mantel Clock Marble, bronze
By Jaeger-LeCoultre
Located in VALLADOLID, ES
Outstanding ATMOS VENDOME watch. The 1962 Atmos Vendome watch from renowned Swiss watchmaker Jaeger LeCoultre is one of the most iconic and fascinating watches in the history of high-end watchmaking, with a rich connection both in terms of engineering and artistic design. It is an extraordinary timepiece, renowned for its near-perpetual movement, powered by minimal fluctuations in temperature. Its mechanism is housed within a square, transparent glass case, offering an unobstructed view of its intricate inner workings. The base and structural elements are made of green marble and bronze, following a neoclassical aesthetic: an architecture of geometric lines and subtle ornamentation. The dial is white, featuring simple Roman numerals and Breguet hands. Known as “the President’s watch”, the Atmos was for a long time the official gift of the Swiss Confederation and this watch graced the desk of the greatest personalities and numerous presidents of republics. Origin and history of the complex mechanism The origin of this clock is due to the Swiss engineer Jean-Léon Reutter (1899-1971), who dedicated his entire life to the search for the so-called perpetual movement. Jean-Léon Reutter surely studied the inventions of Charles Victor Hour, a Frenchman living in Paris who registered several patents, including that of a winding mechanism based on the expansion of gases depending on temperature variations. It is not a recent invention, since the first clocks that used changes in temperature or atmospheric pressure as a source of energy date back to the 17th century. However, for various reasons, this type of clock did not continue, and it was necessary to wait until 1928, when the Swiss engineer Jean-Léon Reutter developed the Atmos clock mechanism as we know it today. In 1928 he presented the first prototype, called Atmos 0, of his clock that obtains its energy from variations in temperature and the environment. This invention quickly had a great impact on the international scientific community and was the subject of numerous articles around the world. However, Reutter faced difficulties related to the mass production of his invention. The method of implementation in the 1926 patent was too delicate to be built, so Reutter invented another system in 1928 that enclosed a mixture of mercury and ammonia in a “U”-shaped glass tube. One end of the tube was thermally insulated, while the other was not. So, when the ambient temperature changed, the expansion of the gas and the weight of the mercury caused the tube to rotate to wind the clock. In 1929, he addressed the problems related to the pendulum’s torsion wire. He further improved his clock and a new version was launched in 1930, two years after the previous one, and was thus the first to be marketed. The watches were not as successful as expected, and it was some time later that Jacques-David LeCoultre, grandson of the founder of the Jaeger-LeCoultre company, discovered this watch by chance in the window of a Parisian watchmaker. Intrigued by this invention that he had heard about but was wary of, he bought a copy and began to study it. This is how he got in touch with the inventor to discuss improvements to be made and to begin a collaboration in 1932 on an in-depth study of the Atmos watch between Jean-Léon Reutter and the watchmakers of Jaeger-LeCoultre. This collaboration led to the creation of the new LeCoultre calibre 30A. On 22 May 1936, the Jaeger-LeCoultre manufacture bought the patents from Reutter and registered the production of the Atmos watch in its statutes. From 1939, the Atmos was fitted with a more water-resistant membrane. But it took ten years to produce, in 1946, the bellows perfectly sealed against the gas mixture: ethyl chloride C2H5CN. The new system uses a hermetically sealed vacuum capsule containing ethyl chloride. This gas expands in a membrane when the temperature rises, which has the effect of compressing the helical spring. When the temperature drops, the gas condenses and the spring relaxes. An Atmos can operate for years without human intervention. A simple variation of one degree (for a temperature between 15°C and 30°C) or a pressure variation of 3 mm Hg is enough to power the clock for more than a day. To operate the clock with this modest source of energy, the mechanism is designed with the minimum possible friction, so it does not contain oil in its gears. Time is measured by a balance that consumes less energy than an ordinary pendulum. In fact, it makes only one oscillation per minute, which is sixty times less than a classic clock...

What makes Jaeger-LeCoultre so special comes down to a few things. The Swiss brand has introduced innovations that have reshaped the art of watchmaking. For example, founder Antoine LeCoultre invented the millionomètre, the first instrument to measure thousandths of a millimeter with total accuracy, in 1844. During the early 20th century, the company created an ultra-slim watch case that was unlike anything that had come before it. The level of quality of Jaeger-LeCoultre timepieces also sets the brand apart. The company prioritizes practical reliability, creating watches that are visually appealing yet capable of performing in demanding circumstances and working precisely for years to come. • 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022
How a Jaeger-LeCoultre Atmos clock works relies on a gas-filled capsule. The gas is temperature sensitive. It expands when temperatures rise and contracts when they fall. This causes the shape of the capsule to change. Each tiny change in capsule size pulls on a chain that winds the clock. Find a range of Jaeger-LeCoultre Atmos clocks on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertDecember 5, 2024
Jaeger-LeCoultre makes its own watches. It was established in 1833 by watchmaker Antoine LeCoultre in the Vallée de Joux of the Swiss mountains. Today, the company's manufacture is in Le Brassus, Switzerland. In addition to crafting movements and components for its own watches, Jaeger-LeCoultre has produced vital parts for timepieces sold by other manufacturers. In 1907, Louis Cartier signed a contract with Jaeger so that Cartier would have movements for its popular timepieces produced exclusively in Switzerland. Patek Philippe, Vacheron Constantin, A. Lange & Söhne, IWC Schaffhausen, Breguet, Panerai, Chopard and Jaquet Droz have all relied on Jaeger-LeCoultre movements at some point during their histories. Shop a diverse assortment of Jaeger-LeCoultre watches on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022
The Jaeger-LeCoultre defines the Atmos as the clock that lives in the moment. The Atmos features an airtight capsule with a gaseous blend trapped inside that expands as the temperature rises and contracts when it drops. This movement changes the size of the capsule, which activates a small chain to wind the clock. Find a collection of expertly vetted Atmos clocks from some of the world’s top boutiques on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertAugust 26, 2024
To tell if a Jaeger-LeCoultre watch is real, look for its serial number, usually found on the movement. By cross-referencing this number with information shared on trusted online resources, you can check to see if your watch features an authentic serial number. Next, study the details of the timepiece carefully. Genuine Jaeger-LeCoultre timepieces are of exceptional quality, so any flaws in the dial, case or band may indicate that a watch is counterfeit. A certified appraiser or other knowledgeable expert can be of assistance with the authentication process. On 1stDibs, explore an assortment of Jaeger-LeCoultre watches.
  • 1stDibs ExpertNovember 26, 2024
