Gucci

Long before trend-bucking creative director Alessandro Michele brought his hallucinatory “Utopian Fantasy” campaign to Gucci, it was a modest Italian leather shop. Today, it’s an internationally renowned luxury house with an iconic logo, and vintage Gucci clothing, handbags and shoes are among high fashion's most covetable goods.

Guccio Gucci (1881–1953) admired the stylish suitcases he saw wealthy guests arrive with at the Savoy Hotel in London, where he worked as a bellhop. So, in 1921, after a stint at Franzi, a luggage company in his hometown of Florence, he opened a leather goods shop of his own.

At first, Gucci’s Florence business specialized in equestrian accessories. But as its reputation flourished, particularly among the English aristocracy, so too did its footprint. In 1938, he brought three of his sons — Aldo, Vasco and Rodolfo — into the business and expanded it to Rome and later Milan. In the mid-1930s, a League of Nations embargo against Italy pushed Gucci to experiment with alternatives to imported leather. Its woven hemp fabric from Naples, adorned with the brand’s signature diamond print, was a hit, especially among A-list celebrities. The material was first used on suitcases before finding enduring popularity on handbags. (No list of revered designer purses would be complete without Gucci.)

In the 1950s, Elizabeth Taylor carried one of Gucci’s bamboo-handled tote bags, another adaptation to material rationing. After Jackie Kennedy was seen sporting a slouchy Gucci tote in 1961, it was renamed for the First Lady. Then Grace Kelly, on a visit to the boutique in Milan, inspired Rodolfo Gucci to work with Italian illustrator and Gucci textile designer Vittorio Accornero on the Flora print in 1966. Taking cues from Sandro Botticelli’s Primavera, with its pattern of flora and insects, it was painted entirely by hand and featured no fewer than 37 colors.

In 1953, just 15 days after opening his first store on New York’s 5th Avenue, Guccio passed away at 72. The early 1970s saw store openings in Tokyo and Hong Kong, but by the late 1980s, Gucci was floundering. Rodolfo Gucci took charge in 1982, but family drama and lawsuits ensued. In 1993, Rodolfo’s son, Maurizio, transferred his shares in the company to Investcorp, ending the family’s involvement in Gucci. Dawn Mello, then-president of Bergdorf Goodman, joined as creative director in 1989. But it was Tom Ford, who took over as creative director in 1994, who ultimately revived the brand.

Ford’s racy ads, shot by photographers such as Mario Testino, stirred controversy. And his potent vision of sexed-up femininity — with “jewel-toned satin shirts unbuttoned to there,” as Vogue described his breakthrough 1995 runway show — was wildly successful. The new millennium brought new ownership — Pinault Printemps Redoute in 2004 — and a more toned-down vision from Frida Giannini, who became sole creative director in 2006. Alessandro Michele was named creative director in 2015, and the storied brand took a giant leap forward.

S/S 1999 Gucci by Tom Ford Madonna Runway Lucky Rhinestone Museum Pants Y2K
By Tom Ford for Gucci, Gucci
Located in West Hollywood, CA
Presenting an unbelievable pair of rhinestone embellished lavender wool pants from Tom Ford's famous 'Las Vegas hippy' collection with Gucci. Most famously worn by Madonna to the 1999 Grammys, where she opened the show and left with four awards, and by Mariah Carey in a 1999 photoshoot. The Spring/Summer 1999 collection is remembered for its drastic departure from Tom Ford's signature sleek minimalism. Ford wanted a challenge after the success of his earlier collections for Gucci. Colorful, exaggerated floral prints and heavy beading served as an exercise in maximalism that stayed true to Gucci's design staples and Ford's reputation for selling sexy. These pants debuted as look number 33 on Danielle Zinaich and in the ad campaign on Jacquetta Wheeler, shot by Mario Testino—part of the iconic Absolut Gucci ad campaign produced by Tom Ford and Absolut Vodka. Testino also shot this campaign in a foam-filled Paris club...

Gucci is pronounced GOO-chee. Gucci is an Italian name -- the renowned fashion house’s founder was Florence, Tuscany-born businessman Guccio Giovanbattista Giacinto Dario Maria Gucci. In the Italian language, the double "c" in Gucci is pronounced with the '"ch" sound that you hear in the beginning of words such as chime or chalk. Find vintage Gucci clothing and accessories on 1stDibs.

Once you locate the number, consult trusted online resources to determine which bag corresponds to it. You may also be able to receive assistance from Gucci customer service once you have the serial number. Gucci began in 1921 as a modest Italian leather shop. Today, it’s an internationally renowned luxury house with an iconic logo, and vintage Gucci clothing, handbags and shoes are among high fashion's most covetable goods. Many people have designed for the house of Gucci since its founding in 1921. Founder Guccio Gucci served as the Italian luxury brand's chief designer in its early days; in 1938, he brought three of his sons — Aldo, Vasco and Rodolfo — into the business and expanded it to Rome and later Milan. Paolo Gucci became chief designer in the late 1960s. Other designers who have guided Gucci include Tom Ford, Alessandro Michele, Sabato De Sarno, Alessandra Facchinetti and Frida Giannini. Gucci has always been one of the world’s most widely loved luxury brands. Its broad-reaching popularity today, however, owes largely to an upsurge of millennial interest in the company. Alessandro Michele was named creative director in 2015, and while this meant that the storied brand began to reflect an integration of popular culture’s influence and streetwear like never before, Gucci has always had a penchant for provocative and eccentric designs that shirk the status quo of fashion, a characteristic that has captivated its lifelong advocates and garnered a new legion of enthusiasts for the luxury house. Celebrities and influencers have further popularized the brand through social media, and pop stars have integrated Gucci in lyrics of hit songs. Find a range of vintage Gucci clothing and accessories on 1stDibs.

To date a vintage Gucci bag, locate its serial number. You can usually find it on the reverse of the logo-stamped leather label inside the bag. While this number doesn't tell you the year of production, it does provide the style and batch numbers of the bag. Once you have the serial number, you can look it up in trusted online databases to find out when your bag was produced. If your bag doesn't have a serial number, it likely dates to before 1960, when Gucci first introduced serial numbers. Should you have difficulty determining the age of your bag, a certified appraiser or other knowledgeable expert can assist you. Explore a large selection of vintage and contemporary Gucci bags on 1stDibs.
