Created during the 19th century by French painter Eugène Petit (1839-1886), this oil on canvas painting depicts two dogs, an English setter and a Gordon setter, hunting ducks. The scene is bathed in a soft light and the dogs are coming from the left side of the composition. Their contrasting coats (white, brown and black) stand out beautifully on the grassy hills. The ducks on the right are rising from the ground, and disappearing in the background. Petit, who was born in Paris in 1839, specialized in still life paintings as well as sporting dogs.
