Superb published lounge set, Christian Adam for Espace Pierre Cardin, Paris 1970
By Christian Adam
Located in bergen op zoom, NL
This lounge set is currently located in Chicago so no import duties and cheaper shipping rates for our American friends.
Super rare and exclusive , the stunning avant garde free form 'tomato' lounge set by Parisian artist Christian Adam is a very seldom seen design, produced in very small numbers. Famously this design featured in the original interior of the iconic experimental house 'Calanque 2000' designed by French architect Jean Balldur in 1971. Please see image 10
The set comprises the extremely rare two seat sofa with two individual lounge chairs. All elements retain their original high quality skai leatherette upholstery so typical of the mid1960s to early 1970s avant garde design period. Both pieces have hidden adjustable disc feet to prevent rocking on uneven floors..
Christian Adam was a visionary artist who was also producing drawings and maquettes for stunning futuristic domestic interior landscapes in keeping with the swinging 60s in Paris. His drawings and interior concepts were exhibited at the 1969 Salon des artistes decorateurs exhibition entitled "Espace et Lumiere" which was held at the Grands Palais des champs Elysees during Septemeber-October 1969 - Please see image 8 for a scan of one of these interior landscapes taken directly from the original exhibition catalogue where the seating and tables, storage and shelving form part integral parts of the floor and walls,
It was not long before Pierre Cardin became aware of Adam's talents and asked him to design a series of avantgarde furniture under the nomer "utilitarian sculptures" for his exclusive Espace Cardin store in central Paris. These chairs were fabricated by the small atelier DB Lambert in Paris.
Pierre Cardin, the inventor of "prêt-à-porter" whose graphically iconic initials personify his signature style, is best known for fashion and accessory design. However, he launched a unique furniture line during the 1970s that transposed his sculptural approach to fashion into furniture design: futuristic forms combined with traditional lacquer and cabinetmaking techniques and revolutionary space-age designs featured metal and plastics.
Artistic director and catalyst, he challenged artists such as Serge Manzon...
