Cartier Drop Necklaces

French jeweler Louis-François Cartier (1819–1904) opened his namesake maison in 1847, and while the now-renowned luxury jewelry house would soon count Napoléon Bonaparte’s niece Princess Mathilde Bonaparte as a client, Cartier necklaces didn’t enjoy attention on the world stage until years later.

Louis-François’s son Alfred became a partner in the Cartier business in 1872 and took the reins officially in 1874. Later, he brought his sons Louis, Pierre and Jacques into the fold, and the brand became internationally known, with boutique branches opening in London, New York City and, in 1908, a Russian boutique in St. Petersburg. Soon, such famous international icons as Grace Kelly, Wallis Simpson and Marjorie Merriweather Post all donned Cartier jewels around their necks on a regular basis. The latter, an heiress to the Post cereal company, purchased what is referred to as the Art Deco style Post Emerald necklace, which features 24 baroque-cut drops of emerald sourced from Colombia, in the late 1920s.

Perhaps one of Cartier’s most recognizable designs is the Collier Hindou necklace, a sumptuous piece encrusted with emeralds, rubies, sapphires and diamonds commissioned by French-American socialite Daisy Fellowes in 1936. Fellowes’s piece was part of what would become the maison’s famous Tutti Frutti collection, whose origins began in 1901 when Pierre Cartier designed an Indian-inspired necklace for Queen Alexandra of Great Britain to be paired with Indian gowns that she received as gifts. Years later, Jacques Cartier started integrating stone-carving techniques from India’s jewelry-making traditions that he learned when he visited Delhi. The Cartier designs of the 1920s and ’30s that featured Indian-inspired carved gemstones in natural motifs such as fruits, flowers and berries would become part of the so-called Tutti Frutti collection, which officially earned its name in the 1970s.

Another well-known and cherished collection is the Amulette de Cartier, which the house launched in 2014. The padlock-shaped necklace symbolizes protecting one’s innermost wishes. The disk-shaped pendant, which opens and closes like a lock, initially featured a black-onyx or diamond centerpiece, and variations have the focal point surrounded by white mother-of-pearl, malachite and other materials. Models Karlie Kloss and Poppy Delevingne have been photographed in the Amulette de Cartier, and sales have soared since its debut.

On 1stDibs, find a variety of contemporary and vintage Cartier necklaces for sale, including pendant necklaces, chain necklaces and other accessories.

Cartier Paris 1900 Edwardian Guilloche Enamel Pin 18Kt Gold Platinum And Diamond
By Cartier
Located in Miami, FL
Belle Epoque pin designed by Cartier. Colorful and very rare stick pin made during the Edwardian-Belle Epoque period. This beautiful piece was created in Paris France by the jewelry house of Cartier, back in the 1900. Carefully crafted in two parts made up of solid platinum, yellow and white gold of 18 karats. Embellished with a central panel decorated with engine turned guilloche topped with purple glossy enamel. Accented with thirty-five natural earth mined rose cut diamonds and the settings are finished with millegrain. Diamonds: Mounted in millegrain settings, with 35 old rose cut diamonds, 0.30 carats, G/H color, SI-1 clarity. Weight: 2.35 Grams, (1.51 Dwt). Measurements: 70 mm by 12 mm (2.76 x 0.47 Inches). Hallmarks Stamped with French marks, the maker's maitre mark CA inside a lozange cartouche, the head of the eagle for the assay and warranty of the gold, the four digits serial numbers and signed, "CARTIER PARIS 3840". Cartier The move to the rue de la Paix coincided with a period of extraordinary economic growth and affluence in France and the world. Cartier was also growing and expanding and had started to shift their emphasis from retailing to design and manufacture. Although they produced a small number of pieces in the Art Nouveau style, Cartier paid scant attention to the movement. They made their distinguishing mark in pioneering the use of platinum in creating the delicate and graceful Garland style that came to be associated with the Belle Époque. The discovery of the great diamond deposits in South Africa in the late 1860’s engendered the popularity of extravagant diamond jewelry. The technical advances in the manufacturing of platinum enabled designs of great intricacy, strength and flexibility such as found in the spectacular résille designs of Cartier. (See Edwardian Jewelry: 1901-1915). Cartier marked the beginning of the twentieth century by opening branches in London and New York, where their wealthiest and most dedicated clientele resided. The 1902 coronation of Edward VII occasioned a large number of commissions from England’s leading families. Records indicate that Cartier produced twenty-seven tiaras alone for the coronation and the event was instrumental in convincing the firm to seek a permanent presence in London. Indeed, by 1904 they had achieved their first of fifteen royal warrants being appointed official purveyor to the court of King Edward VII. The London branch came to thrive under the tutelage of Alfred’s youngest son, Jacques Cartier, establishing London based design and manufacturing workshops. Opening a Cartier store in New York was a natural progression as many of America’s wealthiest families and business magnates had been traveling to Paris for some time to purchase their jewels from Cartier. By 1906 Alfred had largely retired and Louis and his brother Pierre operated the Cartier business jointly. One of their first major decisions was to establish a New York presence and workshop in 1909 under the skilled direction of Pierre. Indicative of his business skills, Pierre famously secured Cartier’s present location, an elegant Beaux-Arts mansion at 653 Fifth Avenue, from industrialist Morton F. Plant in 1917. The building changed hands in exchange for $100 and a double strand of natural pearls, admired by Plant’s wife and valued at one million dollars, the asking price for the mansion. While the Fifth Avenue location remains priceless to the firm, when the pearls came up for auction in 1957, they fetched a mere $170,000. (From Lang's with thanks). Edwardian Jewelry This Period was during the King Edward VII, after whom this period of jewelry history is named, reigned over England for only nine years, yet the style of jewelry known as “Edwardian” was created roughly between 1890 and 1920. Edwardian-era rings tend to be larger, opulent pieces, and stacked ring designs were popular. The metal surfaces of the rings were often diamond-encrusted for additional shimmer. Each of these rings is a work of art, showcasing a bygone era of grace, elegance and the royalty the Edwardian era is named for. Guilloché This term is used in fine jewelry or objects de Vertu to enhance the appearance of boxes, frames, brooches, rings or pendants. Guilloché enamel refers to metal pieces that have been given the Guilloché treatment and then covered with a translucent layer of enamel, giving the geometric patterns underneath the enamel a colorful hue. Millegrain This is a jewelry technique which refers to the textural effect of a close-set line of metal beads that are typically used as a border on the edges or bezels of jewelry. Literature: Sotheby's fine jewels, London September 17 1021, Lot 146 for an identical piece illustrated with the original box Collateral: It is accompanied by the original Cartier presentation green jewelry box...

While jewelry lovers have long been enthusiastic about Cartier’s elegant and streamlined designs for bracelets, rings, necklaces and other pieces, the brand is also known for innovation. It pioneered the use of platinum in fine jewelry, and its artisans were so mindful of trends in fashion that the house became the official jewelry supplier to King Edward VII. Later, Cartier’s Art Deco-era pieces would help define the movement with which they are associated. One of the brand’s earliest major successes was the Santos de Cartier watch, one of the world's first modern wristwatches for men. Today’s influencers continue to help popularize the brand, increasing the demand for certain pieces like Cartier buffalo horn sunglasses and the Cartier Love bracelet, an icon of modernist jewelry. The Cartier logo is a pair of interlocking Cs. However, many people associate the panther with the French luxury jewelry maker more than its actual logo. Louis Cartier incorporated the feline figure into its design lexicon. In 1914, Cartier hired illustrator George Barbier to design advertisements for the jewelry house. Barbier drafted a drawing that featured a glamorous woman with an elegant panther at her feet, and Cartier loved it. He had an additional connection to the panther in the form of his alleged romantic interest, fellow Cartier designer Jeanne Toussaint, who adored the animal so much that she decorated her apartment with furs and donned a coat of panther fur. Cartier gave her the long-lasting nickname Panthère. Since then, Cartier has offered watches, bracelets, necklaces, brooches and earrings inspired by the panther. Today, the Cartier symbol, or logo, is the luxury house's name written in a clean serif font that mimics cursive handwriting. Typically, the logo is either black on white or white on a black background. One of the reasons Cartier is so expensive is because, since its inception in 1847, the brand has had a massive celebrity fan base that spans royals, movie stars, singers and socialites. The brand also uses the highest quality metals and gems in their pieces, rendering them expensive to produce. Lastly, most Cartier pieces are easy to identify, making brand recognition a key factor in the brand's exclusivity.

No, Cartier is not the same as Rolex. Louis-François Cartier founded Cartier in Paris in 1847. Some of its most iconic watches include the Tank, the Santos, the Ballon Bleu, the Calibre de Cartier and the Drive de Cartier. Hans Wilsdorf established Rolex in London in 1905. Today, the maker is well-known for its sophisticated watches, including the Submariner, the Daytona, the DateJust, the Oyster Perpetual and the GMT-Master II. Cartier is special for at least a few reasons. The French luxury brand is one of the most well-known and internationally revered jewelers in the world.

Cartier has helped create style trends over the course of its long history, including playing a prominent role in defining Art Deco jewelry. The brand designed one of the first modern wristwatches for men — the Santos de Cartier — and its Panthère motif and Love bracelet are universally renowned among lovers of fine jewelry.

Additionally, it should come as no surprise that Cartier engagement rings are among the most desirable on the jewelry market for those hoping to be betrothed. The house, founded in 1847 by Louis-François Cartier, pioneered the use of platinum in fine jewelry in the late 1800s, identifying the strong, lustrous metal as ideal for bringing out the true qualities of diamonds.

Why it is called the Cartier Crash relates to the unique shape of the watch. The case and dial of the timepiece have a smashed, wavy appearance, similar to what a watch might look like if it were smashed or crushed in a crash or collision. There are various stories of how this imaginative design came into being. Some people claim that the designers Jean-Jacques Cartier and Rupert Emmerson got the idea for the timepiece after a customer brought in a damaged watch for repair. Another theory is that the prominent melting clock in Salvador Dalí's painting The Persistence of Memory served as the inspiration. Shop a variety of Cartier watches on 1stDibs.

How much a Cartier is worth varies. Many Cartier pieces do appreciate in value over time, but their potential selling prices depend on their age, style, type, availability and other factors. The condition also greatly impacts value, and there can be variability between very similar pieces. For example, one 1930 Tutti Frutti fetched $1.34 million at an auction in 2020, but a simpler one sold for $508,000 in 2023. Because it can be difficult to estimate the value of a piece on your own, experts recommend consulting a certified appraiser or experienced dealer. The Cartier Tank is so popular for several reasons. Many people like its unique shape, which was inspired by the linear form of military tanks during World War I. Others appreciate its long history since it was released in 1918. Over the years, some models have featured details that further appeal to collectors. What a Cartier bracelet symbolizes varies from piece to piece. Yes, Cartier diamonds are real. The French luxury jewelry maker follows stringent standards when selecting the diamonds that go into its pieces. For example, the central brilliant cut diamonds in Cartier rings that are over 0.3 carats in weight must be classified as Very Good or Excellent to be used by the brand, and Cartier rarely chooses diamonds with clarity ratings below VS2 or color ratings below H. Yes, some Cartier watches are automatic but the legendary French luxury house also creates collections that include watches with quartz movements. Cartier’s iconic Tank collection, which includes the Tank Française, the Tank Louis Cartier and other models, features both quartz and automatic options for all kinds of collectors. Each of the watches in the Panthère collection, however, carries a quartz movement.

While quartz watches are powered by a pre-installed battery and a high-frequency quartz crystal, automatic watches rely on a spring system and are self-winding. An automatic watch does not have a battery and is recharged on the wrist owing to the wearer’s movements during the day.

It was Louis Cartier, grandson of Cartier founder Louis-François Cartier, who was responsible for bringing watchmaking to the venerable maison when he presented Brazilian aviator Alberto Santos-Dumont with a wristwatch in 1904.

Although the pocket watch was the de rigueur men’s accessory of the day, Santos-Dumont found his own pocket watch hard to consult while keeping his plane aloft. Louis fashioned a timepiece with a flat, square case on a leather strap that could be referred to easily at a glance. Named in honor of Louis’s friend, the Santos was eventually produced for sale in 1911.
