Bruce Cohen Art
American, b. 1953
Drawing on influences from Dutch seventeenth-century painting and Surrealism, Bruce Cohen’s oil paintings portray ethereal interior scenes constructed from amalgamations of real and invented spaces. Beginning with an observation of light, Cohen creates small color studies and graphite renderings of light and shadow before transitioning to a collaging process, where memories, observations, and invented details come together to construct dreamlike scenarios. Cohen's tightly rendered compositions take on a cinematic, three-dimensional atmosphere with his usage of a crisp, hard edge style and contrasting saturated colors.
Cohen's paintings affect the viewer as though they are intimately, perhaps voyeuristically, peering into the interiors of one’s home. Household objects show signs of habitation, but a figure never emerges. One looks for the story behind the empty room where a chair bathes in the shadowed stillness of a setting sun, and the meaning of a bouquet of brightly lit tulips in an interior cloaked by the clouds of a departing storm. Paul Wonner, Cohen’s mentor, described Cohen’s scenes as “a place where some tremendous, mystical event has just taken place.” The longer one spends observing the placement of each object, the quality of light, the traces, and folds in the tablecloth, the more one grasps for its shrouded narrative. Filled with tension and beauty, Cohen's works are quietly harmonic—as meditative as they are mysterious.
Born in Santa Monica, California in 1953, Bruce Cohen continues to live and work in Southern California. He earned his BA from the College of Creative Studies at the University of California, Santa Barbara in 1975. Cohen is represented in numerous public and private collections, including that of Phillip Morris, New York; Pacific Bell, Los Angeles; the San Diego Museum of Art; and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York.to

ABOUT THE ARTIST
Robert Philipp (1895–1981) was a celebrated American Post-Impressionist painter known for his nudes, still lifes, and portraits. Noted art critic Henry McBride named Philipp one of America's top six painters of his generation. Philipp was an instructor of painting at the Art Students League, New York, for 33 years. Philipp was Secretary of the National Academy of Design, a National Academician, and a Benjamin Franklin Fellow at the Royal Society of Arts in London. His composition and painting style has been compared to the art of Edgar Degas and Pierre Auguste Renoir.
In 1940, Philipp was invited to Los Angeles by Hollywood producer Louis B. Mayer to paint portraits of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer movie stars. The same year, Walter Wanger, producer of ‘The Long Voyage Home’, directed by John Ford and based on plays by Eugene O'Neill, contracted with Reeves Lewenthal, head of the Associated American Artists gallery in Manhattan, to bring nine well-known artists to the set and paint scenes from the movie and portraits of the actors in character. The artists included Robert Philipp, Thomas Hart Benton, Grant Wood, Ernest Fiene, George Schreiber, Luis...

Large Pastel Landscape Purple Mountains Landscape American Modernist Painting

"Purple Mountains," 1988, pastel on paper
Hand signed and dated L/R, "Horowitz '88,"
Dimensions sight 19 1/2" x 23", framed, 26 1/2" x 30 1/2".
Larry Horowitz is an American landscape painter. He was born in 1956 in New York City and graduated from SUNY Purchase and immediately won the prestigious and coveted position as apprentice to Wolf Kahn. Horowitz's work captures the beauty of the American landscape with expert use of texture and color that invites imagination and discovery. Although he paints en plein air, he has a firm grounding in abstract expressionism through his education with former students from the Bauhaus and Hans Hofmann school. He has combined both points of view to develop his unique language. His work follows in the tradition of great Modernist American landscape painters Arthur Dove, Georgia O'Keefe and Charles Burchfield but with a more modern, Fauvist color palette. He was included in the show "In the Country, By the Sea" at Madelyn Jordan Gallery along with David Kimball Anderson, Stanley Boxer, Byron Browne, Derek Buckner, Richard Diebenkorn, Larry Kelsey, Gary Komarin, and Susan Wides.
Horowitz has also shown at Images Gallery along with Gary Bukovnik, Helen Frankenthaler, Larry Horowitz, Alex Katz, Robert Motherwell, Don Nice, Philip Pearlstein, Joseph Raffael, Hunt Slonem, Carol Summers and Neil Welliver. Horowitz has exhibited extensively both in the US and Canada and is included in numerous private, corporate and public collections.
