Based in Chicago, IL, contemporary artist Michael Thompson creates unique kites, collages and mixed media works assembled from material fragments of past and present collected in his travels. In his ongoing series of memory jugs, Thompson adorns stoneware vessels with a kaleidoscope of ceramic shards, found objects, and pocket-sized trinkets he collected over the course of his life. Also known as forget-me-not jugs or spirit jars, memory jugs are African American folk art objects that honor a loved one who has recently passed. Small tokens and mementos of the deceased are gathered and affixed to the exterior of a jug or vase, an abundance of memories that celebrates a life lived to the fullest. Michael Thompson applies this tradition to his own practice, creating tactile assemblages of this and that. Formed in the manner of collage, each jug honors the lost memories of generations past and his own memories of personally discovering each item. Yeonsoo Kim, "Sweet Home," 2024, Porcelain moon jar,, colored clay, underglaze, 15 × 14 × 14 inches Korean ceramic artist Yeonsoo Kim masterfully blends the ancient Onggi tradition with bold, contemporary expression, crafting pieces that chronicle his personal and artistic journey. Drawing inspiration from Korea’s rich ceramic heritage, he redefines Onggi, a centuries-old practice originally used for functional pottery, by infusing it with vibrant colors, unconventional forms, and playful, stylized motifs. His hand-shaped vessels and sculptures become dynamic, modern narratives that capture his thoughts and experiences in clay. Kim’s technique involves spontaneous surface decoration using Sgraffito and calligraphy brushing, resulting in intricate designs featuring whimsical figures, animals, and objects. His work is driven by memories, relationships, and emotions, evolving organically without preplanning, embracing "freedom over perfectionism." Through his reinterpretation of Onggi, Kim merges tradition and modernity, offering a fresh expression of cultural storytelling in each piece. Working with both porcelain and iron-bearing clays, he tailors each material to the expressive qualities of his designs, revitalizing a millennia-old craft for the modern era. Yeonsoo Kim states, "My work serves as a canvas for a diverse cast of characters, engaging in silent conversations that speak volumes through their nuanced expressions. These characters, often resembling self-portraits, invite viewers into a world where implied images and narratives converge. My work reflects my ongoing quest for artistic identity by exploring the intricacies of daily existence. I delve into the depths of human emotion through recurring motifs, transforming abstract inner experiences into tangible visual realities." Yeonsoo Kim earned a BFA in ceramics and glass from Hongik University in Seoul, an MFA in ceramics from the Lamar Dodd School of Art at the University of Georgia, and has held apprenticeships with master Onggi artisans Hayngjong-Oh in Jeolla-do and Jinkyu Huh in Gyeongsang-do, Korea. In 2020, Kim was recognized as one of the top six Emerging Artists by the National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts (NCECA). His work has been exhibited nationally and internationally, most recently being selected for the prestigious 12th International Ceramics Biennale Competition at the Korea Ceramics Foundation in Gyeonggi. In her work she tries to capture the qualities for which porcelain has been known since its discovery in China: whiteness, translucency, and resonance. She is attracted to the enameled and lustered surfaces of the Baroque, Renaissance and Rococo porcelain designs, as well as to elaborations on structural elements of these time periods. She is investigating surface decorations and embellished shapes in order to gain more knowledge for my own studio practice. Sherman is interested in incorporating and referencing historic drawings, motives, and patterns into her work. Studying the history of ceramics Sherman has been captivated by the relationship between East and West, and how they continue to influence each other, especially through the ceramic arts. Although there might be considerable differences between the two civilizations, the cultural exchange between them is an important connector of history and has produced a long and rich exchange of ideas between artists and makers. Asian craft traditions have been handed down to the West and the handmade aspect, even within the factory setting, is still an important concept that allows for control of design and quality by the artist, which is essential within craft of the West.
