Benjamin Williams Leader Paintings
English, 1831-1923
Benjamin Williams Leader entered the Royal Academy Schools from 1856 and exhibited his first painting at the summer exhibition the following year. Leader would go on to become one of the most celebrated landscape artists of the Victorian age and at the height of his fame his paintings commanded the highest prices of any British artist. He exhibited at the Royal Academy every year from 1857 to 1922, an unbroken 65 continuous years, which still stands as a record today.
Benjamin Williams Leader was elected as an Associate of the Royal Academy in 1883, and an Academician in 1898. He also exhibited abroad, winning a gold medal at the Paris Salon and awarded the Legion of Honour in 1889. Examples of Leader’s work can be seen in Birmingham and Manchester Art Galleries, and the Victoria and Albert Museum and Tate Gallery in London.to

Located in Wiscasett, ME
Oil on panel, signed and dated 1894 in the lower left and inscribed on the reverse. The frame measures 15.25" x 19.25".
Leader was born in Worcester as Benjamin Leader Williams, the son, and first child of eleven children, of notable civil engineer Edward Leader Williams (1802–79) and Sarah Whiting (1801–88). His father was described as a "non conformist dissenter" and his mother was a Quaker – their marriage in an Anglican church resulted in them being disowned by the Society of friends. Leader's father was a keen amateur artist – a friend of John Constable – and Benjamin would often accompany him on sketching trips along the banks of the River Severn. His brother, also Edward Leader Williams, later became a notable civil engineer who was knighted for his work, and is now mainly remembered for designing Manchester ship canal...

Benjamin Williams Leader RA (12 March 1831 – 22 March 1923) was an English landscape painter. The inspiration for these early works was the countryside around Worcester itself, "the cottages, farmhouses, lanes, hedgerows and churches, so exceedingly picturesque and beautiful". However, Leader did not finish his course of studies at the R. A, nor did he need to – his paintings proved to be in great demand by wealthy buyers and he achieved an enviable degree of commercial success within only a few years of his first sale. In 1857 he changed his name to Benjamin Williams Leader to distinguish himself from the many other painters with the surname Williams. In autumn of that year he travelled to Scotland, and painted A Quiet pool in Glen Falloch...

Long Winter Shadows 2 is an Original Painting by Eleanor Woolley. The Winter Sun is setting, intensifying the contrast between light and dark. The long shadows are cast on the pavements whilst the shoppers and workers make their way home. Lovely pinks and violets make up this painting, which is inspired Cheltenham's Montpelier on a winters afternoon.
Eleanor Woolley was born in the Channel Island of Jersey, and moved to Gloucestershire where she was drawn to the outdoors, always taking walks in the landscape. Her first true love for painting came from an inspirational...

Benjamin Williams Leader was born in Worcester, his father was a keen amateur artist - a friend of the artist John Constable and studied art at Worcester School of Design and later at the Royal Academy. The surrounding countryside to where he lived served as his early inspiration, the picturesque villages and churches, the fields and rivers. His work proved very popular and he sold successfully. He was a regular exhibitor at the RA. 1859 proved to be his most successful year yet, exhibiting his 'A Quiet Pool in Glen Falloch', following a trip to Scotland, Leader' s work was bought by Agnew's and was now going to private galleries rather than being exhibited publicly.
He painted the landscapes and scenes between the Severn Valley, Worcestershire, and Wales, in particular, exhibited to much acclaim at the RA 1865, was 'Autumn's Last Gleam' and later in 1881 'February Fill Dyke', following which he became an associate (ARA) and then a Royal Academician (RA) in 1898.
