Antique bronze plate by the french animal sculptor and medalist Auguste-Nicolas Caïn ( * November 10 1821 in Paris; † August 6 1894).
This bronze plate depicts "Tigresse portant un paon à ses petits" - "Tigress carrying a peacock to her cubs", which was the template for one of his sculptures. This sculpture is nowadays exhibited in the Musée des Arts décoratifs in Paris.
Cain had turned his attention to predators from 1879. In fact, when you look at his works, you can see that he focused mainly on painting animals in more or less dramatic situations.
He first began by depicting birds and small mammals. Hawks defending their nest against a dormouse (his debut in the Salon), eagles preparing to defend their prey, ferrets taking down a rabbit, cockfights - to then move on to large predators and pachyderms. It should be noted, however, that Auguste Cain also depicted animals in more peaceful attitudes: a partridge family...
