19th Century American Crazy Quilt with Red Stars
Located in Barrington, IL
Hand pieced and hand stitched and hand tied American crazy quilt circa the late 1800s. Each piece in the quilt is individually hand cut and hand tied. It has herringbone embroidered seams on a flannel cotton backing. The beautiful quilt was found in the New England region, possibly having been made in Pennsylvania in the late 19th century. The pieces have bright colors including brilliant red stars, gray, blue, and many others which results in a vibrant hand crafted piece of late 19th century art that can be used as a bed cover or wall art.
Crazy quilts: These quilts were made up of randomly sewn, abstract shapes, and were often embroidered with fancy stitches and motifs. The name "crazy" comes from the irregular shapes and sizes of the patches, which gave the quilt a broken pottery appearance. Crazy quilts were typically made with three layers, but were usually bound and tied to a backing instead of quilted. They were often used as decorative throws instead of bed coverings.
Dimensions: 67” x 84”
Date of Manufacture: 4th Quarter of the 1800s
Place of Origin: United States
Material: Wool, Cotton
Condition: Wear consistent with aged and use

19th Century Hand Stitched American Silk Quilt
Located in Barrington, IL
Celebrate the brilliance of American folk art with this exquisite hand-stitched silk quilt from the late 19th century. Crafted with exceptional skill and care, this quilt features an ultra-modern aesthetic that echoes the iconic “piece bars” style popularized by 19th-century Mennonite quilters in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.
Each rectangular silk piece—measuring approximately 1” x 5”—was individually cut and stitched by hand, creating a striking geometric design that feels both timeless and avant-garde. The rich array of vibrant silk fabrics shimmers with life, making this quilt a true visual feast and a testament to the maker’s artistry and dedication.
More than a textile, this quilt is a labor of love—an heirloom-quality work of art that bridges function and beauty. Due to the delicate nature of 19th-century silk, such quilts have become increasingly rare and highly collectible. Their fragility only adds to their mystique and historical value.
Perfect as a wall tapestry, this handcrafted quilt is equally captivating whether displayed vertically or horizontally. It’s a powerful conversation piece and a beautiful window into America’s rich quilting heritage.

Questions About Amish Quilts
- 1stDibs ExpertMarch 15, 2024Amish quilts are so expensive for a few reasons. They require many hours of labor to handmake and each Amish quilt is unique. In addition, demand for Amish quilts tends to be high compared to the available supply, increasing their value. Explore a collection of Amish quilts on 1stDibs.
- 1stDibs ExpertOctober 15, 2024To tell if a quilt is Amish, start by examining the materials. Typically, the majority of an Amish quilt will be bright, solid colors, with black material reserved only for the border. Next, grab a magnifying glass. Most Amish quilts will have 6 to 10 stitches per square inch, and because the quilts are stitched by hand, you may notice slight variations in the size of individual stitches. Becoming familiar with traditional Amish quilt patterns, such as Diamond in Square, Lone Star and Sunshine-and-Shady, can also help you identify potential Amish quilts. If you're still unsure about the maker of your piece, a certified appraiser or knowledgeable dealer can be of assistance. Explore a large selection of Amish quilts on 1stDibs.
