A live-edge table is a table that sees the actual gnarled shape of the edge of a tree on at least one side of the structure. Max Ernst lived in several places during his life. He was born in Brühl, Germany, in 1881 and later moved to Bonn to attend the university located there. Then he settled in Cologne, not far from his birthplace. In 1922, Ernst moved to France, where he soon became affiliated with Surrealism, the avant-garde art movement taking shape in Paris. Alongside Man Ray, Joan Miró and others, Ernst was among the first visual artists to experiment with imagery and techniques associated with Surrealism. When Germany occupied France during World War II, Ernst escaped to America with the help of patron and collector Peggy Guggenheim, whom he married in 1941. While living in New York, Ernst's work and techniques proved instrumental in inspiring the early development of Abstract Expressionism. He later moved to Sedona, Arizona, where he lived with his fourth wife, Dorothea Tanning, a fellow Surrealist and prolific visual artist and poet. While Ernst and Tanning are largely responsible for Sedona's reputation as an artist colony, they relocated to France in the 1950s and remained there until Ernst's death in Paris in 1976. On 1stDibs, shop a collection of Max Ernst art.

Live edge or natural edge furniture incorporates the natural edge of the wood into the piece. This may mean that the artist even leaves the natural cracks, or they might fill them in with resin. Because the pieces are unique and in high demand, the pieces can be more expensive than other wooden furniture.

Van Gogh lived in several places over the course of his life. Vincent van Gogh was born in Zundert, Netherlands, in 1853. Before becoming an artist, he worked as an art dealer in London, UK, and as a missionary in Belgium. Then, in 1886, he moved to Paris, where he met avant-garde artists Paul Gauguin and Émile Bernard and became inspired to begin painting. By 1888, van Gogh had grown weary of Paris and decided to relocate to Arles, France. While living there, he produced many of his most famous works, including Café Terrace at Night and the Sunflowers series. After a brief stay in a psychiatric hospital, van Gogh moved to Auberge Ravoux in Auvers-sur-Oise in May 1890, and he died there two months later. On 1stDibs, explore a collection of fine art.
