How Much are Breuer Cane Chairs?
Finding the Right Seating for You
With entire areas of our homes reserved for “sitting rooms,” the value of quality antique and vintage seating cannot be overstated.
Fortunately, the design of side chairs, armchairs and other lounge furniture — since what were, quite literally, the early perches of our ancestors — has evolved considerably.
Among the earliest standard seating furniture were stools. Egyptian stools, for example, designed for one person with no seat back, were x-shaped and typically folded to be tucked away. These rudimentary chairs informed the design of Greek and Roman stools, all of which were a long way from Sori Yanagi's Butterfly stool or Alvar Aalto's Stool 60. In the 18th century and earlier, seats with backs and armrests were largely reserved for high nobility.
The seating of today is more inclusive but the style and placement of chairs can still make a statement. Antique desk chairs and armchairs designed in the style of Louis XV, which eventually included painted furniture and were often made of rare woods, feature prominently curved legs as well as Chinese themes and varied ornaments. Much like the thrones of fairy tales and the regency, elegant lounges crafted in the Louis XV style convey wealth and prestige. In the kitchen, the dining chair placed at the head of the table is typically reserved for the head of the household or a revered guest.
Of course, with luxurious vintage or antique furnishings, every chair can seem like the best seat in the house. Whether your preference is stretching out on a plush sofa, such as the Serpentine, designed by Vladimir Kagan, or cozying up in a vintage wingback chair, there is likely to be a comfy classic or contemporary gem for you on 1stDibs.
With respect to the latest obsessions in design, cane seating has been cropping up everywhere, from sleek armchairs to lounge chairs, while bouclé fabric, a staple of modern furniture design, can be seen in mid-century modern, Scandinavian modern and Hollywood Regency furniture styles.
Admirers of the sophisticated craftsmanship and dark woods frequently associated with mid-century modern seating can find timeless furnishings in our expansive collection of lounge chairs, dining chairs and other items — whether they’re vintage editions or alluring official reproductions of iconic designs from the likes of Hans Wegner or from Charles and Ray Eames. Shop our inventory of Egg chairs, designed in 1958 by Arne Jacobsen, the Florence Knoll lounge chair and more.
No matter your style, the collection of unique chairs, sofas and other seating on 1stDibs is surely worthy of a standing ovation.
- What is a cane chair?1 Answer1stDibs ExpertFebruary 22, 2021Cane chairs feature a woven pattern on either the seat or the back. They're called “cane” chairs because the woven part is made of cane, which is basically the skin of a rattan vine. Once it's peeled off, it's woven into the intricate pattern for furniture.
- What is cane on a chair?1 Answer1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022Cane is made by using rattan bark, a plant with a long stem. It is woven into a mesh of split canes, which is then stretched over parts of the framework. In this case, cane is woven to make a chair seat and back, for a rustic look. On 1stDibs, find a range of cane chairs from some of the world’s top sellers.
- 1stDibs ExpertApril 22, 2024Marcel Breuer designed several chairs. One of his best-known pieces is the Wassily lounge chair made of tubular steel and leather straps. Breuer named the chair after the artist Wassily Kandinsky. Among the designer's other notable chairs are the Cesca chair, the B35 lounge chair and the S 35. On 1stDibs, find a diverse assortment of Marcel Breuer chairs.
- 1stDibs ExpertMarch 22, 2022Today, Marcel Breuer chairs are made in the factory locations of the furniture manufacturer Knoll, Inc. It operates production facilities in Italy and Canada, as well as in Pennsylvania and Michigan in the U.S. Find a collection of Marcel Breuer furniture on 1stDibs.
- 1stDibs ExpertAugust 15, 2024To tell if a Breuer chair is real, look closely at its chromed tubular steel frame. A genuine Breuer chair will have polished, welded ends, while replicas tend to feature visible end caps. You can also search for a label under the seat. These labels changed over the years, so compare yours to images of the labeling that appears in images of authentic chairs shared on trusted online resources to assess authenticity. Alternatively, you can seek the opinion of a certified appraiser or knowledgeable antique dealer. On 1stDibs, explore a range of Marcel Breuer chairs.
- Are cane chairs strong?1 Answer1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022Yes, a properly cared for cane chair is very strong. Because cane is a plant fiber, it can dry out and become brittle over time. However, with proper oiling and by keeping your chairs out of direct sunlight, you can enjoy your cane chairs for many years to come. You’ll find a wide selection of cane furniture, including chairs, on 1stDibs.
- 1stDibs ExpertMarch 22, 2022To reupholster a Marcel Breuer Cesca chair, first pry out the staples, remove the original upholstery and disassemble the chair. Place the new fabric on a flat surface and position the seat upside down. Fold the fabric over the edge and secure it with a staple gun. On 1stDibs, shop a selection of expertly vetted Marcel Breuer Cesca chairs.
- 1stDibs ExpertMarch 22, 2022There are a number of ways that you can tell an original Marcel Breuer chair. One trick is to examine the frame. If you see end caps, you're likely looking at a replica. Authentic Breuer chairs featured polished, welded ends. Some chairs also feature stickers that identify the model name located under their seats. On 1stDibs, find a collection of expertly vetted Marcel Breuer chairs.
- 1stDibs ExpertMarch 22, 2022Marcel Breuer created the Cesca chair while splitting his time between Paris and Germany. He made the chair in 1928, shortly after he left the Bauhaus school, but you can clearly see the influence of the institution's design principles in the clean, simple lines of the piece. Find a range of Marcel Breuer Cesca chairs on 1stDibs.
- 1stDibs ExpertMarch 22, 2022Most Marcel Breuer chair legs are made out of bent tubular steel. The designer introduced this radical new material to modern furniture design with his Wassily Model B3 lounge chair. On 1stDibs, you can shop a collection of Marcel Breuer chairs.
- 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022While cane back chairs have been made around the globe for thousands of years, it was in the 1970s that this style took the world by storm and became a must for many households. It’s the organic, natural look of a cane back chair that made it so desirable and that makes it a modern furniture element as well, with its tropical vibe and vacation attitude. Shop a collection of cane back chairs from some of the world’s top sellers on 1stDibs.
- 1stDibs ExpertMarch 3, 2023Whether cane chairs are comfortable is largely a matter of personal opinion. Designs vary widely, but pieces with upholstered seats may provide plusher support. On 1stDibs, find a variety of cane chairs.
- 1stDibs ExpertMarch 22, 2022What was most innovative about Marcel Breuer's Model B3 chair was its frame. Also known as the Wassily lounge chair, the piece featured a lightweight, sturdy tubular steel frame inspired by the artist's Adler bicycle. His use of the metal started a radical shift in furniture design. You’ll find a variety of Marcel Breuer Model B3 chairs 1stDibs.
- 1stDibs ExpertOctober 12, 2021To cane a chair, it will cost around $50 for the sheet and materials. If your chair has holes around the edges and it is an older piece, thin cane strands can be used to recane it. A professional will charge roughly $2 per hole, resulting in a chair costing approximately $350. Find cane furniture today on 1stDibs.
