The Legacy of Diamond in Jewelry Design

Antique diamond rings, diamond tiaras and dazzling vintage diamond earrings are on the wish lists of every lover of fine jewelry. And diamonds and diamond jewelry are primarily associated with storybook engagements and red-carpet grand entrances — indeed, this ultra-cherished gemstone has a dramatic history on its hands.

From “A Diamond Is Forever” to “Diamonds Are a Girl’s Best Friend,” pop culture has ingrained in our minds that diamonds are the most desired, the most lasting and the most valuable gemstone. But what makes the diamond so special? Each stone — whether it’s rubies, sapphires or another stone — is unique and important in its own right. April babies might claim diamonds for themselves, but just about everyone wants this kind of sparkle in their lives!

There are several factors that set diamonds apart from other stones, and these points are important to our gem education.

Diamonds are minerals. They are made up of almost entirely of carbon (carbon comprises 99.95 percent; the remainder consists of various trace elements). Diamonds are the hardest gemstones, ranking number 10 on the Mohs Hardness Scale. Even its name, diamond, is rooted in the Greek adamas, or unconquerable. The only object that can scratch a diamond is another diamond. Diamonds are formed deep within the earth at very high temperatures (1,652–2,372 degrees Fahrenheit at depths between 90 and 120 miles beneath the earth’s surface) and are carried up by volcanic activity. Diamonds are quite rare, according to the Gemological Institute of America, and only 30 percent of all the diamonds mined in the world are gem quality.

In the 1950s, the Gemological Institute of America developed the 4Cs grading system to classify diamonds: clarity, color, cut and carat weight. Not all diamonds are created equal (there are diamonds, and then there are diamonds). The value of the diamond depends on the clarity (flawless diamonds are very rare but a diamond's value decreases if there are many blemishes or inclusions), color (the less color the higher the grade), cut (how the diamond’s facets catch the light, certain cuts of diamonds show off the stone better than others) and carat weight (the bigger, the better).

When you start shopping for a diamond engagement ring, always prioritize the cut, which plays the largest role in the diamond's beauty (taking the time to clean your diamond ring at least every six months or so plays a role in maintaining said beauty). And on 1stDibs, a range of buying guides can be found for those in the market for antique engagement ringsvintage engagement rings or Art Deco engagement rings

Finding the Right Necklaces for You

We are fortunate to know much of the world’s long and dazzling history of necklaces, as this type of jewelry was so treasured that it was frequently buried with its owners. Today, Van Cleef necklaces, Tiffany necklaces and Cartier necklaces are some of the most popularly searched designer necklaces on 1stDibs.

Lapis lazuli beads adorned necklaces unearthed from the royal graves at the ancient Iraqi civilization of Sumer, while the excavation of King Tut’s burial chamber revealed a sense of style that led to a frenzy of Art Deco designs, with artisans of the 1920s seeking to emulate the elegant work crafted by Ancient Egypt’s goldsmiths and jewelry makers.

In ancient times, pendant necklaces worn by royalty and nobles conferred wealth and prestige. Today, wearing jewelry is about personal expression: Luxury diamond necklaces exude confidence and can symbolize the celebratory nature of a deep romantic relationship, while paper-clip chain-link necklaces designed by the likes of goldsmith Faye Kim are firmly planted in the past as well as the present. Kim works exclusively with eco-friendly gold, and these fashionable, fun accessories owe to the design of 19th-century watch fobs.

For some, necklaces are thought of as being a solely feminine piece, but this widely loved accessory has been gender-neutral for eons. In fact, just as women rarely took to wearing a single necklace during the Renaissance, men of the era layered chains and valuable pendants atop their bejeweled clothing. In modern times, the free-spirited hippie and counterculture movements of the 1960s saw costume-jewelry designers celebrating self-expression through colorful multistrand necklaces and no shortage of beads, which were worn by anyone and everyone.

Even after all of these years, the necklace remains an irrefutable staple of any complete outfit. Although new trends in jewelry are constantly emerging, the glamour and beauty of the past continue to inform modern styles and designs. In a way, the cyclical history of the necklace differs little from its familiar looped form: The celebrated French jewelry house Van Cleef & Arpels found much inspiration in King Tut, and, now, their Alhambra collection is a go-to for modern royals. Vintage David Webb necklaces — whose work landed him on the cover of Vogue in 1950, two years after opening his Manhattan shop — were likely inspired by the ornamental styles of ancient Greece, Mesopotamia and Egypt

On 1stDibs, browse top designers like Dior, Chanel and Bulgari, or shop by your favorite style, from eye-catching choker necklaces to understated links to pearl necklaces and more.

Questions About 90carat Diamond Necklace
  • 1stDibs ExpertNovember 6, 2023
There is no hard-and-fast rule for how many carats a diamond necklace should be. On average, solitaire diamond necklaces range from 0.5 to 1 carat, but you can find pieces with larger and smaller stones. Tennis chains that feature continuous diamonds set into links usually have much higher total carat weights. For example, one might feature 60 individual diamonds, each 0.20 carats in size, for a total carat weight of 12.0 carats. Shop a wide range of diamond necklaces on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertMarch 22, 2022
A 24-carat diamond is a precious diamond gemstone that weighs 24 carats. One carat weighs 200 milligrams, meaning a 24-carat diamond weighs roughly 4.8 grams. That equates to roughly 0.17 ounces. On 1stDibs, shop a variety of diamond jewelry.
  • 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022
Yes, there are three-carat diamonds, and you can find them from a number of different jewelers and other retailers. Find an assortment of diamond jewelry from the world’s top sellers on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertNovember 1, 2023
How many carats a tennis necklace is depends on the size and number of diamonds that it features. For example, a tennis necklace with 100, 0.1 carat diamonds would have a total weight of 100 carats, while one with 60, 0.2 carat diamonds would be 120 carats in total. Generally, the longer a tennis necklace is and the larger its gemstones are, the higher the total carat weight will be. Shop a range of tennis necklaces on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertFebruary 27, 2024
In terms of dimensions, how large a 3-carat diamond is varies. The shape of the diamond will determine its length and width. Weighing 600 milligrams, diamonds that are 3 carats are generally considered to be large stones. On 1stDibs, shop a large collection of diamond jewelry from some of the world's top dealers.
  • 1stDibs ExpertFebruary 22, 2021
The size of a 12 carat diamond is dependent on diamond cut. A 12 carat round diamond is roughly 15 mm in size.
  • 1stDibs ExpertAugust 17, 2021
A 7-carat diamond can cost anywhere between $12,000 and $185,000 depending on the quality of the stone. The fewer imperfections, the more expensive the diamond. Some 7-carat diamonds can cost more than $400,000.
  • 1stDibs ExpertSeptember 28, 2021
A 9-carat diamond’s worth varies depending on the 4Cs of diamond quality — color, cut, clarity and carat. On average, a 9-carat diamond could cost you between $19,000 to $1,000,000. It is also likely that the price range per carat will be even broader. On 1stDibs, you can find a variety of 9-carat diamond jewelry from different periods and styles to choose from.

  • 1stDibs ExpertFebruary 27, 2024
Whether a 1.5-carat diamond is too big depends on the type of jewelry in question and your personal preferences. A single stud earring that is 1.5 carats is rather large and would cover the entire earlobe. In terms of rings, a 1.5-carat diamond is larger than average. Find a variety of diamond jewelry on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertFebruary 13, 2023
Yes, a two-carat diamond is generally rarer than a smaller diamond, especially high-quality two-carat diamonds. When larger diamonds are found in nature, they usually have flaws. And prices per carat don’t increase as weight increases. A three-carat gem can be less valuable than a one-carat stone, for example, if all of the other attributes are of lesser quality in the larger diamond. Shop an assortment of diamond jewelry from some of the world’s top jewelers on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022
A nine-carat diamond is considered rare and holds a premium price. Because of their rarity and size, nine-carat diamonds are a coveted choice for engagement rings. One of the most famous nine-carat diamond rings belongs to actress Kate Hudson, who has a nine-carat emerald cut diamond complemented with tapered baguettes on a platinum band. Shop a selection of diamond jewelry on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertSeptember 28, 2021
The minimum value of a 25-carat diamond ranges from $300 to $1,400. The prices change subject to the fluctuation of market factors. The value is defined based on the 4Cs — color, clarity, cut and carat weight. Shop antique, vintage and new diamond jewelry on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertFebruary 22, 2021
The cost of a diamond necklace can range quite a bit depending on material, craftsmanship, quality, and condition. On 1stDibs.com, you can shop a variety of diamond necklaces at a range of prices. Browse contemporary and antique necklaces starting at $125.
  • 1stDibs ExpertNovember 27, 2023
Whether half-carat diamond studs are too small is a matter of personal opinion. A pair of diamond studs with a total carat weight of 0.5 usually consists of two 0.25-carat earrings. Many jewelry makers offer studs as small as 0.13 carats, so many people consider half-carat diamond studs to be medium-sized. On 1stDibs, shop a collection of antique and vintage diamond stud earrings.
