Stephen Schulz (American, b. 1948) is an artist who has lived and worked in Fresno and Santa Cruz, California, and Cedar Grove, New Jersey. He has studied privately with Julie Connell, Jan Daniels, Michele Faia, Elle Fielder, Sal Pecoraro, Susan Stover, and Chris Volpe.
Artist’s Statement:
“My painting and artistic expression opens the doorway into an unconscious and creative world, where an uninhibited expression can take place, as one becomes immersed without the perception of time.
Painting and design started it. From the beginning the process of transforming materials into art has struck me as a magical alchemy and, over the years, that mysterious process has had its hold on me, leading me from hobby to art. The creative process fills me with a sense of wonder and has proven a most amenable vehicle for transforming inner vision to outer reality.
I paint from the inside out. Though I work quite deliberately, consciously employing both traditional and innovative techniques, my unconscious is the region of the most fertile of creative soil.
I love working with a full complement of colors but often find my design direction working within the narrow spectrum of black and white, shadow and light. Some of my early inspiration comes from the New York School and artists such as Franz Kline and Jackson Pollock. Their ideas and techniques have helped to free my mind to explore areas of the unconscious that aren’t restricted by the world of right and wrong, good and bad. The journey continues and I feel blessed to have the opportunity to explore this exquisite world of the creative process.”

Demetre Haralamb Chiparus (also known as Dumitru Chiparus) (16 September 1886 in Dorohoi, Romania - 22 January 1947 in Paris, France) was a Romanian Art Deco* era sculptor who lived and worked in Paris.
He was born in Romania, the son of Haralamb and Saveta. In 1909 he went to Italy, where he attended the classes of Italian sculptor Raffaello Romanelli. In 1912 he traveled to Paris to attend the Ecole des Beaux Arts* to pursue his art at the classes of Antonin Mercie and Jean Boucher.
Demetre Chiparus died in 1947 and was buried in Bagneux cemetery, just south of Paris.
The first sculptures of Chiparus were created in the realistic style and were exhibited at the Salon of 1914. He employed the combination of bronze and ivory, called chryselephantine*, to great effect. Most of his renowned works were made between 1914 and 1933. The first series of sculptures manufactured by Chiparus were the series of the children.
The mature style of Chiparus took shape beginning in the 1920s. His sculptures are remarkable for their bright and outstanding decorative effect. Dancers of the Russian Ballet, French theatre, and early motion pictures were among his more notable subjects and were typified by a long, slender, stylized appearance. His work was influenced by an interest in Egypt, after Pharaoh Tutankhamen's tomb was excavated.
He worked primarily with the Edmond Etling and Cie Foundry in Paris administrated by Julien Dreyfus. Les Neveux de J. Lehmann was the second foundry which constantly worked with Chiparus and produced the sculptures of his models.
Chiparus rarely exhibited at the Salon. In 1923 he showed his Javelin Thrower, and in 1928 exhibited his Ta-Keo dancer. During the period of Nazi persecution and the World War II, the foundries discontinued production of work by Chiparus. The economic situation of that time was not favorable to the development of decorative arts and circumstances for many sculptors worsened.
Since the early 1940s almost no works of Chiparus were sold, but he continued sculpting for his own pleasure, depicting animals in the Art Deco style. At the 1942 Paris Salon, the plaster sculptures Polar Bear and American Bison were exhibited, and in 1943 he showed a marble Polar Bear and plaster Pelican.
Sculptures of Dimitri Chiparus represent the classical manifestation of Art Deco style in decorative bronze ivory sculpture. Traditionally, four factors of influence over the creative activity of the artist can be distinguished: Serge Diaghilev's Ballets Russes, ancient Egyptian art, and French theatre. Early motion pictures were among his more notable subjects and were typified by figures with a long, slender, stylized appearance. Some of his sculptures were directly inspired by Russian dancers.
Quite often, Chiparus used the photos of Russian and French dancers, stars and models from fashion magazines of his time.

Through his extraordinary journey, the French artist, Philippe Pasqua, has emerged as one of the major artists of his generation. His taste for the monumental is opposed to the attraction he has for what is most vulnerable and deep. For several years, the artist has also been going to Carrara frequently, where he sculpts skulls weighing several tons that are like massive stars radiating telluric energy. At the foundry, he produces large bronze casts that are then plunged into baths of chrome. The skulls that emerge — human or animal, like that of the hippopotamus — become like mirrors: sometimes you only see their blinding reflection, sometimes they disappear, so that what they are reflecting emerges. And on approaching them, inevitably it is our own image that we see.
He explores the theme of butterfly-decorated vanities, emphasizing the contrast between the symbol of the soul in ancient Egypt and the great fragility of existence.The skulls represent the spirit of the elders who take flight to become butterflies by the purity of their souls, symbolizing a new cycle of life to celebrate the ephemeral and the infinite.
He launches into the realization of a tyrannosaurus Rex in aluminum-chrome of 7 meters long and 4 meters high, composed of 350 bones molded on a real prehistoric skeleton and assembled one after the other.
Pasqua’s huge sculptures have embellished the streets of Paris, and were exhibited at the 53rd Venice Biennale, in Moscow, Germany, Beijing, Monaco, Israel and the United States.
His latest exhibition in September 2017, extended until January 2018, was a great success. Today, Philippe Pasqua is considered one of the most important sculptors and painters working in France, and his works collects large sums in auctions.
Pasqua has exhibited in several museums to great acclaim, including his retrospective at Ahlers Foundation (Hanover, Germany, 2010), “Painting and Drawing” at the Moscow Museum of Modern Art (June 2010) , Galerie Zemack juin 2017 and the monumental show “Boarderline” at the Oceanographic Museum of Monaco (2017). To invest the premises of the Oceanographic Museum of Monaco with monumental works, all inspired by a single theme: the preservation of the oceans and our planet, this is what Philippe Pasqua set himself as a challenge. Part of the Pennsylvania School, impressionists who painted in Bucks County, Pennsylvania and who were regarded as the leading landscape school in the early part of the 20th century, Morgan Colt had joined the group in 1912. Along with Edward Redfield, Daniel Garber, Robert Spencer, Charles Rosen, William Lathrop and Rae Sloan Bredin, they eschewed modernism and exhibited together, calling themselves the New Hope Group.
However Colt was better known for crafts than for painting, but he did exhibit paintings with the New Hope Group in 1916 and 1917 at the Cincinnati Art Museum, Detroit Art Institute, Corcoran Gallery, the Carnegie Institute and the Arlington Gallery in New York City. By 1929, many of these artists plus others exhibited together, calling themselves the New Hope Art Colony, but Colt died before their first exhibition, which was in May 1929.
Colt's background was architecture, which he had studied at Columbia University. Of him it was said that among the Pennsylvania School, he made more of a contribution as a craftsman than as a painter. He was born in Summit, New Jersey.
