About the Item
Simon Shepherd, Cheeser, 2015
Ceramic Sculpture
17.8 x 22.9 x 22.9 cm (7 x 9 x 9 in)
Edition of 3 (unsigned)
London-born artist Simon Shepherd works from his studio in Brighton. His work explores the distinctions between the familiar and the unfamiliar, the natural and the manufactured. Shepherd identifies and develops the beauty of the everyday object and invites the viewer to reassess their expectations and perceptions of objects that surround us daily. Executing his work in clay, steel or wood allows Shepherd to realise his vision without limit, examples of which can be found in collections around the world. Asked what motivates him, Shepherd explains that ‘’in a world of confusion and contradiction, it’s the only thing that makes any sense.’’ In 2011, Simon was awarded ‘Best in Show’ at the prestigious Cork Street Open.

Brighton-based sculptor Simon Shepherd finds the similarities between two seemingly different objects and brings them together to highlight their unexpected connection in appearance and often in essence. It’s the only thing that still makes sense these days, he believes, “in a world of confusion and contradiction”. Thus, he sheds light on new possible meanings, sharing a different side of the story everyone is either involved in, talking about or consuming as part of an unquestioned routine.

Matisse's Persian Woman - Sculptural Ode to Henri Matisse in Hand Built Ceramic
By Sandy Kaplan
Located in Chicago, IL
Henri Matisse collected Persian carpets, Arab embroideries and African wall hangings throughout his life, his studio becoming a treasure trove of exotic and vibrant pattern. The collection was practical — it was the impetus for various works with voluptuous women surrounded by rich textures and patterns. Sandy Kaplan takes Matisse's work to a three-dimensional level in her ceramic piece simply titled "Matisse's Persian Woman".
