Jake Michael Singer
Rilke, Murmuration

2024

About the Item

"Rilke, Murmuration" is another intriguing sculpture by Jake Michael Singer, crafted with mild steel. The structure of this piece is organic and dynamic, with a sinuous form that spirals upward, reminiscent of a twisting column of air or the fluid movement of a flock of birds in flight. The sculpture's title, a reference to the poet Rainer Maria Rilke, may suggest an inspiration drawn from the lyrical and introspective qualities found in Rilke's poetry. The color of the mild steel it is on a natural state, giving the sculpture a monochromatic palette that highlights the interplay of light and shadow across its many steel elements. These elements are meticulously arranged to create a textural surface that almost seems to be fluttering or rippling with movement. The bottom part of the sculpture flares out to form a base, grounding the upward swirl of the piece. It is reminiscent of a bird's tail in the midst of a dynamic maneuver. The overall effect is one of motion frozen in time, a moment of a murmuration's complex pattern captured and rendered in metal. The craftsmanship involved in manipulating mild steel into such a fluid and expressive form speaks to the artist's ability to transform industrial materials into works that evoke the ephemeral beauty of natural phenomena.
