The theme van der Kraan likes most is to show the growing of young girls. Living in their own world. Like this girl watching something she likes. The narrative sculptures show 'the woman' and 'the girl' withdrawn into 'the self'. The posture, the dress, the look, everything contributes to showing the vulnerability in the transition from girl to woman.
Wim van der Kraan lives and works in Eindhoven, city of Design, Industry and technology in the south of the Netherlands, just a few km's from our gallery in Nuenen, the village where Vincent van Gogh painted 'The Potato Eaters' and walked around to draw and paint nature and models in Nuenen and Eindhoven.
Sculptures of van der Kraan are made in clay, month after month he works to capture the narrative of the model. When he is ready he creates a mold for the bronze. After the bronze is casted he is ready to make the patina to give the sculpture it's final color.
