My materials include hand-dyed commercially fished line and ghost gear, recycled and antique textiles, fabric printed with cyanotype emulsions and found objects. I change the existing surface of recognizable animals by creating a veneer of unexpected color and imagery. This forces the viewer to consider the shape more carefully by visually exploring its new topography. The creation process can be likened to painting with fiber (that has been tinted with hand-mixed dyes) on a three-dimensional canvas. "Midnight," is a stunning sculpture by Canadian artist, Yulia Shtern. She as modeled this work after the endangered Mongolian species Altai Argali. The animal is brightly colored, in a rainbow color scheme in this work. She has done a fabulous job of making her subject matter eye catching and dynamic. Shtern styles this series after the tradition of mounting heads by hunters, but instead she gives life to her up-cycled materials and fights against the inhumane act of trophy hanging. "Lulu" is a beautiful contemporary sculpture created by the Canadian artist Yulia Shtern. Her work depicts beautifully decaying remnants of species on our planet that are currently endangered. Shtern utilizes common household materials such as produce netting and colored cardboards in her up-cycled process to authenticate her message. An unfortunate truth of our current society that is often forgotten. Shtern creates these beautiful pieces to draw the viewer in and force them to engage with reality head-on. This work is eye-catching with a delicate texture and vibrant colors and would brighten up any room.
