Outdoor Garden Totem - Glazed Ceramic Sculpture by Marc Zimmerman

2023

About the Item

This Totem by Marc Zimmerman is currently on display at Earthbound Farm, nestled in California's Carmel Valley. -- "My natural flow with clay stems from my first artistic passion; pottery in the 1960’s - 70’s in Venice Beach, California. A 40 year career in Fine art painting has given way in the last year to my original passion: clay creations. This time designing pole stacked ceramic totems. Garden Totems are glazed clay constructs; each sculpted part supporting the whole assemblage creating one unique sculpture. Each totem is a unique expression based on my inspiration of the moment, yet the thread of my personal style may be seen in each one. Some totem designs start off with a sketched concept. - however, I enjoy being in the moment giving into spontaneous creation. Make a part and then another based upon the former :ie one part referring and giving rise to another until complete. This spontaneity keeps me in the moment with fresh new inspiration. Garden Totems are here to invigorate the garden or interior space with playful decor and a joie de vivre. ----- Marc Zimmerman creates playful paintings, whether deep mysterious jungle or delightfully whimsical florals. His color palette explores various harmonies yet always surprises with new color excitement. Years of working with the woodcut print can be seen in Marc’s concise clarity of form and texture. His botanical world was initially inspired by the French artists; Henry Rousseau and Paul Gaugin. Painting journeys to the island of Kauai fueled Marc’s passion for the jungle series, lasting over 12 years. Having painted for 40 years, Marc now dedicates himself to the inventive and delicious world of color and form with his latest body of work; “Tropical Fantasy Floral “ Keywords: clay, sculpture, fish, cats, bird, face, portrait, figurative, animal, spiritual, spirit, totem, connection, earth, mother nature, sculptor.

These forms come to me on walks, while I work in my garden, or appear as gifts from friends who share my fascination with the beauty inherent in Nature’s abundant variety of forms. It is often the metamorphosis of nature’s forms, as they change from season to season, that attracts me. I am endlessly drawn to that universal world in which differing life forms share similar qualities. I spend countless hours contemplating a particular form in order to feel its energy. It becomes a Zen-like connection not unlike a meditation. As an artist, I hope that those who choose to connect with my work can share some of the harmony and tranquility I feel through the creative process. Perhaps, at the very least, the viewer will give those small, often unnoticed forms in Nature a second glance. Alice R. Ballard. (born June 16, 1945, Florence, South Carolina) is an American ceramicist based in Greenville, South Carolina. Much of her work is characterized by the organic earthenware forms of closed containers...
