About the Item
Edition of 9
Jim Rennert was born in 1958, and grew up in Las Vegas, Nevada, and Salt Lake City, Utah. After ten trying years of working in business, Rennert was inspired to explore his artistic vision and embarked upon his career as a sculptor in 1990. He began exhibiting in galleries in 1993 and has since gained significant recognition.
Rennert’s seminal series of works is immediately identifiable, with simplified figures and forms depicting men in suits. Combining the traditional medium of bronze with modern forms of flat laser cut steel, he illustrates concepts of corporate success and the obstacles faced by the modern working man. Drawing on both his past professional experiences, and those of his contemporaries, Rennert composes thought-provoking works to which viewers undeniably react and relate. Early works emphasize movement and physical metaphor, while more recent pieces show the development of a more contemplative character. In 2016 Rennert also released his first series of two-dimensional works, a collection of digital drawings available as large-scale prints.
Rennert continually exhibits at the major US art fairs as well as galleries in New York, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Florida, Utah, New Mexico, Maine, Colorado, and British Columbia, with private and corporate collectors world-wide. From June 2014 through May 2015, Rennert was honored with a monumental public installation of his iconic sculpture, THINK BIG, which was on exhibition in New York City’s Union Square, in cooperation with the NYC Parks Department.

Jim Rennert was born in 1958 and grew up in Las Vegas, Nevada and Salt Lake City, Utah. After 10 years of working in business, Rennert started sculpting in 1990. He had his first bronze sculptures cast by a foundry in Lehi, Utah, in 1992. He began exhibiting his work in commercial galleries in 1993. Working closely with the foundry in Lehi, Rennert learned to execute all aspects of the lost wax method of casting bronze. After acquiring the necessary equipment for the production of his work, Rennert now works out of his home studio in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Jack Kerouac was born Jean-Louis Lebris de Kerouac in Lowell, Massachusetts, in 1922, to French-Canadian parents. He won an athletic scholarship to Columbia University, where he met Allen Ginsberg and William Burroughs, but dropped out after one year after an argument with the football coach. He then became a merchant seaman all through World War II, with the idea of becoming a traveler and novelist in the tradition of Jack London and Thomas Wolfe.
After Kerouac's stint in the Merchant Marines, he settled in New York and began his first novel, “The Town and the City”, which took about two years. His father died in 1946 and Jack lived with his mother, Gabrielle, to whom he was extremely devoted. He referred to her as Mémère, and she continued her work in a factory in order to support him while he was writing. During this time, he met a young would-be writer from Denver, Neal Cassady...

"Maxwell Street" wall sculpture
Located in Glen Ellen, CA
Sandblasted carved glass, cast glass, bronze and wood.
Steve Linn describes himself as a documentary sculptor, conducting meticulous research on each of his selected subjects and choosing which references to interpret for the piece he then creates. "I was born and raised in Chicago," Linn says, "and in 1956 before my 13th birthday, my father took me to Maxwell Street to buy me my first suit. This was a momentous occasion, not because I was getting a suit, but it was my introduction to the blues. Maxwell Street was the center of Jewish pushcart commerce and haberdashery emporiums, it was also where black blues musicians congregated, played, and thrived in harmony with their neighbors. My dad let me stay and listen that day and I became a life-long fan."
The merchants provided electrical extension cords from their establishments to power the amplifiers of the musicians, and in return the musicians were an attraction to lure customers into the shops. Many famous blues musicians got their start on Maxwell Street having migrated to the city from the deep south: Muddy Waters, Little Walter, Bo Diddley, and Howlin...
