About the Item
Environmental Advocacy
"I will inhale smoke and exhale butterflies"
This quote, gleaned from a dream, encapsulates my need to take man’s pollution of this world and transform it into something of nature.
As a multidisciplinary artist, I explore the possibility of a material’s ability to transform. My focus is on fiber and mixed media constructions and installations that convey environmental activism, while incorporating material based sub-text. My materials include commercially fished line, ghost gear, recycled and antique textiles as well as found objects, which come together to create a universe only slightly different from our own.
The resulting effect is a cocktail of science, culture, nature, myth, history, and ritual, inhabiting the space of its viewers with intrigue while inspiring thoughtful dialogue of how material can be both physical as well as an abstract concept. The beauty inherent in nature is brought to life to craft a portrait of meaning and movement, while building chapters on evolution and ecology. An installation approach I frequently employ is the natural history museum style of diorama.
Born in New York in 1971, I now live and work in a studio located on a spit of sand on coastal Massachusetts.

Gin Stone
From 1989 until 2010, Gin Stone worked solely as a painter- this background gave her a strong knowledge of color and form. Over a decade ago, she began experimenting with textile, particularly reclaimed fishing gear and line. From trial and error with different types of gear, she found that longline, used to commercially fish haddock and cod local to her studio, could be hand-dyed and manipulated into a strong color pallet with a uniform gauge. She create three dimensional work by cutting and re-piecing material to make the animal’s ‘pelt’s. Other details are hand carved from shell, stone, wood and metal. In 2018, she was invited by the Provincetown Art Association and Museum to conduct a course at the Lillian Orlowsky and William Freed Museum School on exploring new processes and creating a cohesive body work. Stone is a PAAM member with her work in their permanent collection alongside such notables as Robert Motherwell, Hans Hoffman and Edward Hopper. Stone has delivered talks at the Chandler Gallery, Cambridge, MA; the Fountain Street Gallery, Boston; and the Cambridge Art Association, Cambridge. In collaboration with Fountain Street, Chandler and Kathryn Schultz galleries, she has curated several shows in the Boston and Cambridge area. Her work has been included in exhibitions by such notable curators as Randi Hopkins, Director of Visual Arts Boston Center for the Arts; Paul Ha, Director of the MIT List Visual Arts Center; and Sam Tager, Independent Curator and Exhibition Designer. Gin has been awarded grants from the Rauschenberg Foundation, the Arts Foundation of Cape Cod and the Berkshire Taconic Community Foundation. Born in New York in 1971, Stone currently lives and works in eastern coastal Massachusetts.

Water Tower Sculpture: 'Pit'
By Ethan Minsker
Located in New York, NY
The images on the water towers are from the artist sketchbook. It was also a part of a wheatpaste street art initiative from 2020. During the COVID lockdown he wanted to inject a little bit of nature back in downtown New York. Referencing not only wildlife in general but also specifically from the neighborhood. In this series you might find dogs or cats from artists he personally knows but you might find a raccoon that somehow invaded the city.
Ethan Minsker's descriptors include writer, filmmaker, artist, publisher, and zine creator. His work chronicles the lifestyles and cultures of overlooked and underappreciated artists. He was a founding member of the Antagonist Art Movement, a New York City-based group of artists, writers, and musicians who promoted work by up-and-coming talent between 2000 and 2011. Ethan was the recipient of the Acker Award for Visual Arts in 2017. He was also the creator and editor-in-chief of Psycho Moto Zine, which has been in publication from 1988–present. He received his B.F.A. in Film with honors from the School of the Visual Arts and his masters in Media from the New School.
