Gaia, Glass and Mosaic Sculpture, 2021

About the Item

Artist Commentary: This model stated during the photo shoot that ever since elementary school she has felt a strong connection to the earth and that as an adult has embraced the identity of Gaia the Greek mythological figure. Keywords: portrait, figurative, glass mosaic, glass art Artist Biography: Born in Zimbabwe, Gerald has also lived and worked in South Africa, United Kingdom, and Trinidad & Tobago. Initially trained in textile design, Gerald's early work experience was in commercial art. Stained glass fabrication was added to his artistic experience in 2007, when he joined the team at Rudy Art Glass Studio in York, Pennsylvania where he now resides. In 2009 he turned his creative energy to mosaics and established Gerald Davidson Studio where he creates personal work and commissions for private clients. Gerald's mosaics are a decidedly contemporary interpretation of an ancient art. Using art glass as his primary medium, he thrives on experimenting with and exploring new styles, techniques, and use of materials. The themes, designs, and colors of his creations are a reflection of his diverse interests, travels, cross cultural experiences and background in commercial art. Some of the highlights of his career have been, as a founding member and teacher/trainer of a youth arts program in his native Zimbabwe; a 2-year long project designing and fabricating stained-glass windows for a church that had been damaged by fire; and collaboration with a local water company to design, fabricate, and install a mosaic mural commemorating their 200th anniversary.
