About the Item
'Bride' is an original springstone sculpture signed by the Zimbabwean artist Brian Nehumba. Brian was trained in the Shona stone carving tradition and this is an excellent example of his work, combining abstract and human forms. The sculpture takes the form of an elegant woman with long hair and graceful arms. she stands, but leans to the side in the shape of a whiplash curve. In her hand, she holds a bowl, suggesting the celebration of her nuptuals. Brian plays with the texture of the springstone, bringing the body of the bird to a high and deep polish while leaving parts of the stone perch rough-hewn.

Brian Nehumba was born on March 4, 1976 in Harare, Zimbabwe – the first born in a family of eight. He grew up in Chitungwiza and did his primary education at Seke Five High School where he obtained six 'O' level passes. After school and during his holidays, Brian would visit artists like Nesbert Masunda, Chitua Jemlia, Deford Kanyemba and Kaitano Ngamu and entertain them with stories while he worked. With the help of Kaitano, he sharpened his sculpting skills. After completing his secondary education, he decided to fully invest his time in sculpting and by 1996 he opened a workshop alongside his younger brother Terence P. Nehumba. He mostly uses springstone and opal, but also metal and wood.
