About the Item

A 19th Century classical roman imperial Red Porphyry and ancient Yellow, knew also as Giallo Numidia marble sculpture bust of Julius Caesar in grand tour style circle of Benedetto Boschetti. Caesar is considered by many historians the founder of the Roman Empire, the first Emperor and one of the greatest military commanders in history, cognomen was subsequently adopted as a synonym for "Emperor"; the title "Caesar" was used throughout the Roman Empire. Caesar was an accomplished author and historian as well as a statesman; much of his life is known from his own accounts of his military campaigns. Other contemporary sources include the letters and speeches of Cicero and the historical writings of Sallust. Later biographies of Caesar by Suetonius and Plutarch are also important sources. He has frequently appeared in literary and artistic works, and his political philosophy, known as Caesarism, inspired politicians into the modern era. A member of the First Triumvirate, Caesar led the Roman armies in the Gallic Wars before defeating his political rival Pompey in a civil war, and subsequently became dictator of Rome from 49 BC until his assassination in 44 BC. He played a critical role in the events that led to the demise of the Roman Republic and the rise of the Roman Empire. The Red Porphyry or also Imperial Porphyry was considered the most precious and important marble and was used only for imperial works to immediately advise the status and the magnitude of the artwork. Benedetto Boschetti was a roman sculptor and artist and led a workshop on the Via Condotti in Rome that became one of the foremost in producing fine sculptures after the antique for a Grand Tour clientele. Boschetti himself is recorded as having won a prize medal at the Great Exhibition in London in 1851, and a bronze 'Augustus Caesar' from his workshop was exhibited at the 1876 Centennial Exhibition in Philadelphia. The Grand Tour was the principally 17th to early 19th-century custom of a traditional trip through Europe, with Italy as a key destination, undertaken by upper-class young European men of sufficient means and rank (typically accompanied by a chaperone, such as a tutor or family member) when they had come of age (about 21 years old). In Rome, antiquaries were also dealers and were able to sell and advise on the purchase of marbles that shown and reproduce Roman antiquities. From Venice the traveller went to Rome to study the ancient ruins and the masterpieces of painting, sculpture, and architecture of Rome's Medieval, Renaissance, and Baroque periods. Some travellers also visited Naples to study music, and (after the mid-18th century) to appreciate the recently discovered archaeological sites of Herculaneum and Pompeii, and perhaps (for the adventurous) an ascent of Mount Vesuvius. Later in the period, the more adventurous, especially if provided with a yacht, might attempt Sicily to see its archeological sites, volcanoes and its baroque architecture, Malta or even Greece itself. But Naples – or later Paestum further south – was the usual terminus.
