About the Item
This abstract sculpture from the Windfall Series by Shayne Dark is made from one of the applewood burls collected from apple orchards in Prince Edward County, Ontario. Many of the local apple orchardists were paid by the government to cut down their apple trees in order to control the apple market, This meant that healthy mature apple trees were destroyed for the commodity markets during a period where the trend is to eat local. Dark collected these dense knotty burls, stripped off the bark and stored them for a number of years to allow them to dry.
Dark's original intent was to fill the natural cracks, sand smooth and paint the burls in a solid color. However after spending time repairing the cracking in the dried burls he found a beauty in the repair. He was reminded of the Japanese art of fixing broken pottery Kintsugi. This philosophy views breakage and repair as part of the history of an object, rather than disguising the repair.
In 2016, Dark exhibited at the Brooklyn Sculpture Center, where he was artist in residence. The same year, he was given a solo exhibition at the Albright Knox, NY. Dark has received six Ontario Arts Council grants and a Pollock-Krasner Foundation grant. His work may be found in numerous private, corporate and public collections including Queen’s University, the Canadian Embassy in Prague, the City of Ottawa, the Federal Communications Commission, New York.
