About the Item
Simply stunning. They shine like jewels…This is Shayne Dark’s Reflections of Nature Series. Dark’s superb sculptural work is informed by nature. This series of wall sculptures—tondos in stainless steel, copper and bronze have detailed inlays that resemble natural organic patterns such as the inner ring of trees, and root structures. (The number of rings in a tree determines its age and what the climate was like during each year of the tree’s life.)
Each tondo has a unique pattern that Dark cuts into the steel. The entire surface is then sprayed with molten copper and bronze to create a shimmering inlay. The whole sculpture is then polished back to a mirror finish which reflects light and its surroundings.
“Dark seeks to reveal the inner beauty of the things around us with the aim of fostering a direct contemplation of the world, without the mediation of the artistic sphere.” Katrie Chagnon, Art Historian
He was the artist in residence at the Brooklyn botanic garden in 2016 following a successful residency at the Albright Knox and Buffalo botanical garden in 2015 and a feature article on his work in Sculpture magazine. At Art Basel in Toronto, Dark was named one of the top ten artists to watch. In 2017, Dark had a solo exhibition at New York’s Brooklyn Botanical Garden and the following year he was inducted into the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts. In 2022, Dark exhibited at the Cloud 9 Eco-Art Festival at No. 9 Gardens in the Rideau Lakes, Ontario. His work can be found in numerous private, corporate, and public collections.

Shayne Dark
Poised between abstraction and representation, the artworks of Canadian artist Shayne Dark (b. 1952, Moose Jaw, SK) are often coated in eye-popping saturated pigments. His networks of steel branches or steel stones, indoor and outdoor iterations, are a contemplative intersection of the industrial and the organic. In 2016, Dark exhibited at the Brooklyn Sculpture Center, where he was artist in residence. The same year, he was given a solo exhibition at the Albright Knox, NY. Dark has received six Ontario Arts Council grants and a Pollock-Krasner Foundation grant. His work may be found in numerous private, corporate and public collections including Queen’s University, the Canadian Embassy in Prague, the City of Ottawa, the Federal Communications Commission, New York.

Henge, sculpture by Kerry Green, copper, bronze, abstract, figures, metal sculpture
Since childhood, Kerry Green has always been creative; painting, drawing, sculpting, and sewing. Her family provided her with materials and encouraged her efforts. She literally grew up in her parents’ art galleries, and with them toured the U.S.,
Europe, Mexico, Japan, and New Zealand, seeing museums and visiting artists’ studios. Growing up in Arizona and New Mexico gave her the opportunity to explore the Native reservations there where she has made life-long friendships. Several of her very early influences were Dr. Harry Wood...

Chapel, 1948-2021, Artist's Statement:
“I was raised on the Western Slope of Colorado, with almost unfettered access to the American wilderness. I currently reside on a sailboat in Oakland, CA with my studio in nearby San Leandro. I work with permanent materials including bronze, steel, stainless steel, aluminum, glass and stone. It is my contention that a work of art must include a complete environment, not just a single object. In my opinion, it is very difficult to convey meaning with either pure abstraction, or pure representation. Describing an abstract concept with another abstraction does not define the subject.
There is nothing in a completely non-objective artwork from the viewers experience upon which to base some meaning. One the other hand, a completely realistic presentation doesn't define an abstraction any better than a dictionary. This is why my sculpture is a blend - the symbolic joining of modern man with primitive experience.
They are in-depth studies of the archetypes and symbols used to communicate their relevance to our everyday lives. Mythology, poetry and art are humanity's attempt to describe the mysteries of life which are beyond our ability to consciously comprehend. This is the appeal of the visual arts, poetry, literature and music; they excite an emotional response, or memory that transcends mere words.” - Ron Chapel...
