Robert SestokUNTITLED, Abstract/Figurative, Black Welded Steel, Cass Corridor Artist, Detroit
About the Item
SALE ONE WEEK ONLY
The "Untitled" abstract sculpture by Robert Sestok has a very deliberate aura of strength in its columnar shape. It does become more detailed upon closer inspection as the many cutout pieces separate into individual figures forming similar but different identities. What is being said here? That though separate, humanity functions better when the intent is to work together? Could it be said that we need each other in order to function at our best? Knowing Robert and his generosity towards others and his talent and ability to mentor young artists, leads to an interpretation that this sculpture is a strong statement about our shared humanity and focus.
Robert Sestok is one of the creative well-known Detroit Cass Corridor artists. He is the only artist from the group that started in the 1960s who continues to live and work in the Cass Corridor. His work is in numerous permanent collections, including the Detroit Institute of Arts, Cranbrook Museum of Art, and Wayne State University. He has exhibited at the, Museum of Contemporary Art (Chicago, IL), Cranbrook Museum of Art (Bloomfield Hills, MI), College for Creative Studies (Detroit, MI), Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit (Detroit, MI), and Marianne Boesky Gallery (New York, NY.) He is the recipient of grants from the Pollock-Krasner Foundation, the National Endowment for the Arts, and a 2017 Kresge Artist Fellowship.
In 2015 he opened City Sculpture Park, a permanent public art space in Detroit’s Midtown neighborhood, exhibiting three decades of sculptural work. He is one of the original Cass Corridor artists’ who sought new forms and methods to reflect their times of civil rights struggles, the anti-war movement, and the pervasive automotive industry that earned Detroit its MoTown nickname. Non-standard materials such as pipes, trash, junk yard metal, auto parts, and wood scraps were used to create an entirely new form of expression. Sestok’s 15 foot sculpture of discarded automobile parts will be exhibited for the next two years as part of the 2018 Murals in the Market, located at Eastern Market, Shed 5. During 2018 he exhibited a new series of prints with collage at the Simone DeSousa Gallery and sculpture at Detroit Collective. He is currently working on a series for his Big Paintings show of large format portraits of one individual reflecting the subject’s many moods and the artist’s interpretation of them.
Robert attended The Cranbrook Academy of Art in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, that was designed by architect and faculty member, Eliel Saarinen who collaborated with Charles and Ray Eames on chair and furniture design. Numerous creative artists who are alumni of Cranbrook include: Harry Bertoia, Florence Knoll, Jack Lenor Larsen, Donald Lipski, Duane Hanson, Nick Cave, Hani Rashid, George Nelson, Urban Jupena (Nationally recognized fiber artist), Artis Lane (the first African-American artist to have her sculpture, "Sojourner Truth," commissioned for the Emancipation Hall in the Capital Visitor Center in Washington DC), Cory Puhlman (televised Pastry Chef extraordinaire), Thom O’Connor (Lithographs), Paul Evans (Brutalist-inspired sculpted metal furnishings), Eugene Caples (small bronze images/abstract), Morris Brose (Bronze Sculptures), Herb Babcock (blown glass), Larry Butcher (mixed media) and Lauren Anais Hussey (Abstract.)

View All"Draped Figure" Sassafras & Bronze, Figurative Sculpture, 1982
Located in Detroit, MI
"Draped Figure" is a beautiful example of Tazian's ability to meld the smooth texture of wood and the hard texture of bronze into an exquisite object to view, hold or caress. The piece balances perfectly on its stone base and can be easily turned to enjoy from all angles.
Like architects Eliel Saarinan and Albert Kahn and sculptor Corrado Parducci, Tazian is an immigrant creative who has found a home in the city, nurtured by its energy and sheltered by its community.
He developed an early ambition to become an artist, even though he had very little exposure to the arts. ““The only person [who encouraged me] was my 5th grade English teacher, Olivia Balian,” he says. “She really opened the doors of art for me. She said, ‘Those students who are interested in art can stay behind after school and I will show you how to paint and draw.’ Somehow [that] changed my life– she gave me that spark.”
Tazian came to the U.S. to study at St. Francis College in Fort Wayne, Indiana. He earned a bachelor’s degree in art and a Master’s in Art Education, and then earned and MFA in sculpture from Wayne State University in Detroit.
Kegham Tazian is an award-winning sculptor and painter. The Armenian-born artist has gained notoriety for the diversity of his work and the variety of media exemplified in his pieces. A blend of modernism, realism and abstraction are commonly depicted in his paintings and sculptures.
His artwork has been represented in more than 40 solo exhibitions and more than 75 group exhibitions throughout the United States, Canada, Europe, and the Middle East. His work adorns the entrances and halls of major corporations, universities and municipalities, including Siemens Corporation, Huntington Bank, Wayne State University and the city halls of Farmington and Farmington Hills...

Morris Brose, Polish/American was born in Wyszkow, Poland. He became a sculptor and instructor of sculpture at the Detroit Institute of Arts, Wayne State University and Cranbrook Academy of Art, Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. Walter Midener "Contemplation" Seated Figure Clay Sculpture Mid-Century Modern
Located in Detroit, MI
“Contemplation” is an abstract clay sculpture of a female. The figure has both arms and legs extended, but the dignified pose suggests an intimate rather than a sexual moment. The sculpture is delicately rendered, but monumental in pose and clean composition reminiscent of the English artist Henry Moore. The surface is warm and slightly rough to the touch. This sculpture is in the round and beautifully balanced geometrically with the hands clasped behind the head forming a slightly flattened polygon shape that is echoed in the positioning of the legs and draped fabric of a presumed dress. The figure draws the viewer into her contemplation, peace and confidence. An exceptional piece by Midener.

Danielle Bodine "Medusa Tree" Mixed Media, Abstract Free Form Signed
Located in Detroit, MI
SALE ONE WEEK ONLY
"Medusa Tree" is a free-flowing sculpture of cane that suggests a figure either emerging from or descending into a tangle of twisting lines. Several parts are painted red or blue or stripped that gives a contrast to the black structure and a spark of energy shooting forth. This piece seems experimental from her more conservative pieces that can be easily identified as basketry, paper forms and shaped objects.

John Piet "Untitled" Abstract Geometric Steel
Located in Detroit, MI
SALE ONE WEEK ONLY
John Piet's "Untitled" from 1974 is a welded sculpture with two opposing forms connected by a swoop of steel. Piet's sculptural work explores the tension between contending elements, and other works investigating the relationship of heaven and earth. The form shown here in Untitled appears similar to the form in his 1975 large-scale work The Entrance currently located at the entrance of Harmonie Park in Detroit.
The abstract drawing in the pictures above is part of the sculpture offer. The drawing was a study, work-in-progress, as John "worked out" the details of the final sculpture.
John Piet was born in Detroit on American Street, and was educated at the Detroit Society of Arts and Crafts (now named College for Creative Studies). College for Creative Studies (formerly Center for Creative Studies) faculty and graduates include Richard Jerzy, Harry Bertoia, Doug Chaing (currently director of Lucas Film), Stephen Dinehart (game maker, writer, designer connected with The David Lynch Foundation), Tyree Guyton (international artist), Herb Babcock, Jerome Feretti, Kevin Siembieda (writer, designer and publisher of role-playing games), Renee Radell, Philip Pearlstein, Charles McGee (nationally recognized African American sculptor of animal and dancing spirits), Philip Pearlstein (2000 Honorary Doctorate, Modern Realism style), John Louis Krieger (American Modern), William Girard (American Modern), Charles Culver, Henry Heading, Hughie Lee-Smith and Joseph Wesner.
