About the Item
Richard Erdman's abstract sculpture "Salient I" is carved from gorgeous white Carrara marble from Italy. Made with companion piece "Salient II" (not shown here -- available in separate listing), Erdman focused specifically on the crescent shape: "Salient I" is an arrangement of six crescents, and "Salient II" seven. By restricting his visual vocabulary in this way, Erdman explains that he was “forced to work in a way where each crescent would be honored.” The pair are two of Erdman's rare sculptures that evoke a figure from certain angles, even as they remain very definitely abstract.
These playfully curving works are models for two monumental sculptures also carved in gorgeous Carrara marble. They are available individually, as listed here, or as a pair. Dimensions include the white, square, marble base as shown.
Shown in over 130 solo and group exhibitions throughout North America and abroad, Vermont sculptor Richard Erdman has been commissioned to create major works in stone and bronze for The PepsiCo Sculpture Gardens in New York, the Four Seasons Park in Singapore, The Minneapolis Institute of Art in Minneapolis, and Princeton University in New Jersey. His work is in extensive private collections in over 40 countries worldwide.

Pisapia's "Expedition Series," inspired by sea voyages, is about meeting life’s challenges with courage and purpose. It connects to the idea expressed by J.W. Goethe: “Character is formed in the stormy billows of the world.” Taking up life’s tasks can require one to go against the wind. The feeling of determination to achieve and continue steering through obstacles is poured into the pure forms; a dynamic balancing of the straight and curve on different axes. "With a rounded starting point," Pisapia explains, "I add on a variety of disparate angles, diverse curves, and twisting planes. I carve and smooth the surfaces, bringing out particular tensions and transitions."
Flavius Valone Pisapia is an Italian-Romanian artist born in Bucharest in 1981. He completed his higher education in the UK, with an MA in Transpersonal Arts & Therapy, 2014; a Diploma in Transformative Arts, 2011; and a BA (Hons) in Film and Video, 2005. Pisapia studied sculpture throughout his higher education and appreciated several sculptor mentors in the UK. Since 2016, he has resided in India, where he is currently an artist in residence at Studio Sukriti in Jaipur. He has had several solo exhibitions in India and his artwork is found in private collections worldwide.
"It's important for me to experience the world at a deeper level by penetrating the veil of the senses. Through an immersive process the essence, beauty and the pure form of an idea are gradually revealed to me. The emerging awareness flows into my artwork imbuing it with a higher reality. To achieve this awareness in my creative process, I go through three stages: imagination, inspiration and intuition." - Flavius Pisapia

Chapel, 1948-2021, Artist's Statement:
“I was raised on the Western Slope of Colorado, with almost unfettered access to the American wilderness. I currently reside on a sailboat in Oakland, CA with my studio in nearby San Leandro. I work with permanent materials including bronze, steel, stainless steel, aluminum, glass and stone. It is my contention that a work of art must include a complete environment, not just a single object. In my opinion, it is very difficult to convey meaning with either pure abstraction, or pure representation. Describing an abstract concept with another abstraction does not define the subject.
There is nothing in a completely non-objective artwork from the viewers experience upon which to base some meaning. One the other hand, a completely realistic presentation doesn't define an abstraction any better than a dictionary. This is why my sculpture is a blend - the symbolic joining of modern man with primitive experience.
They are in-depth studies of the archetypes and symbols used to communicate their relevance to our everyday lives. Mythology, poetry and art are humanity's attempt to describe the mysteries of life which are beyond our ability to consciously comprehend. This is the appeal of the visual arts, poetry, literature and music; they excite an emotional response, or memory that transcends mere words.” - Ron Chapel...
