About the Item
Greg Chann creates contemporary modern abstract geometric sculptures. His constructions are complex interwoven systems of physical elements varying in size, material, and color. These elements are joined in a multitude of points, metaphorically representing the dynamics and circuitry of life inspired by the idea of global connectivity.
Chann takes inspiration from ancient Chinese Yin and Yang forces that may be contrary but prove to actually be complementary, interconnected, and interdependent. Buddhist mandalas and their representation of focal energies and metaphysical wholeness influenced his work. Chann provokes the viewer to take a visual journey, meandering in, out, and around the sculpture. His pieces are created with structure and discipline, the rigid compositions reminiscent of Mondrian’s paintings and De Stijl philosophy. Yet the liveliness and dynamic complexity is present in the bright Fauvists colors. Chann’s geometric designs are Bauhaus like – solid, clean, and deliberate, while at the same time defying the lack of sentiment that is often associated with the Bauhaus.

New York based artist, Greg Chann lives and works in Brooklyn, having a studio at the infamous Brooklyn Navy Yard. Chann’s constructions are complex interwoven systems of physical elements varying in size, material, and color. Yet the liveliness and dynamic complexity is present in the bright Fauvists colors. Chann’s geometric designs are Bauhaus like – solid, clean, and deliberate, while at the same time defying the lack of sentiment that is often associated with the Bauhaus. Light becomes one of the primary components of his work. It is a constant creative collaborator providing Chann’s works with perpetual variant, color, and atmosphere. His acrylic colored forms possess not only nuances of soft translucent color and texture but also a reflective surface that evolves throughout the day. The shapes come alive, the steel wire offers a framework and structure echoing the compositions as well as establishing balance and weight. Among the numerous exhibitions Chann has had throughout his career are the ones at Denise Bibro Fine Art, NYC; Cold Air Fine Art, NYC; MUE Gallery, Los Anglees, CA; Dorsky Gallery, NYC; Margaret Thatcher Projects, NYC; The Drawing Center, NYC; Felissimo, NYC; Empire-Fulton Ferry State Park, Brooklyn, NY; University of Louisville Art Gallery, Louisville, KY, among many others. Chann’s work appeared in "The New Yorker", "NY Arts", "Time Out New York". Among his rewards are a NY Foundation of the Arts Fellowship, NY Foundations of the Arts/Felissimo Award. His artworks are a part of such collections as Peter Arnell/AG Worldwide, NYC; Galleri Bo Bjerggaard, Copenhagen, Demark; General Dynamics, Falls Church, VA; Georgia & Christopher Erck, San Antonio, TX; Arabella Kiesbauer Redaktion, Munich, Germany. Chann received his MA from Yale University, CT, and his BA from University of Louisville, KY.

Untitled Sunflower Bouquet Sculpture
Located in Los Angeles, CA
The sunflower and the bouquet is an idea that has been floating around in the artist's head for years. It starts with the notion of the still life, the most basic subject when approaching visual art. It's the attempt to look at that which is full of life, yet by acknowledging its existence, one understands that beauty is temporary and will fade. This series starts with the flower, the symbol of fleeing beauty. By taking this character and turning it into a cast object, the artist has turned it into an icon, further removed from reality by bleeding it of color. The sunflowers then become beautiful shadows their former selves, as dying coral becomes enticing when it bleaches. They are elegant reminders of their past, whilst also becoming new figures that reference archaic notes of classical beauty expressed monochromatic hues.
STATEMENT
In the end, gravity always wins. It is the blunt, immutable force that has a constant effect, keeping us on the ground and ultimately pulling us into it. Sculpture by its very nature is in conversation with this pull, at times enjoying and acknowledging it, and at times trying to hide and defy it.
My work recognizes the force of gravity, sometimes tacitly and sometimes overtly. It is a practice of mixing the delicate with the ordinary. I have been mining the contrasts of sculpture, relishing the materiality while also attempting to address the ephemeral. Because sculpture is so heavily rooted in the ground, one has to accept its materiality. Yet, some of the most effective work I have witnessed is that which attempts transcendence. It is that steady push and pull between mass and lightness, solidity and absence, form and void. Additionally, I am drawn towards familiar objects and associations that are embedded within them. Current work makes reference to visual anchors such as bodily forms, sagging, or bloating. Whether the product is a still life created in Scotch tape or a bouquet composed of plaster flowers, I look to the fantastic as a goal in my work. The work is intensely representational in content but without clearly assigned meaning, thus creating a disquiet. In this way I think in a surrealist vein, looking to traditional figures like Eva Hesse and Piero Manzoni, and contemporary figures like Robert Gober and Matthew Barney. The juxtaposition of the seemingly simple streamline objects with this disquiet adds a powerful force to the work, again symbolic of the contrast between the emotional life which defines us as humans and the compulsions and minutia that compose our daily lives.

Zsolt Berszán’s work speaks of repulsion and fascination and at the same time speaks about shapes that lie on the border between hallucination and obsession wherein the identity and order were disrupted.
Themes such as the double and the metamorphosis, otherwise put, themes of atrophied characters are all representations of the abject.
Berszán’s creation is located at the fine border between the representation of identity and its dissolution thusly aiming to represent the non-symbolized. The dynamic separation and the transitional object...
