About the Item

Entanglements: Seeking Beauty in the Overlooked My work challenges the traditional norms of an artist's medium and practice. Materiality often becomes my muse, driving my creative process to question: What is considered beautiful, and why? While my materials may seem unconventional, the focus is not on the materials themselves, but rather on the abstract sculptures they form. My aim is to captivate the viewer, sparking visual delight and inviting them to engage with the work. This interaction often leads to the discovery of the materials that lie beneath the surface. This series blends my minimalistic reed and rubber-enrobed forms with a newly discovered technique of knitting with factory waste paper. The pieces in this series are entirely made from salvaged materials, including factory-discarded dressmaker’s pattern tissue and reclaimed orange polymer fiber cording. The cording, once used to bind bales of pine straw—a natural mulch used in flower beds throughout the southeastern United States, where I now reside—finds new life in these creations. By transforming overlooked and discarded materials into visually striking sculptures, I challenge viewers to reconsider their perceptions of value and aesthetics in art. -Eileen Braun

Large Sculpture: 'Lady Whistlesdown Baggage Cart' : Emotional Baggage Cart
By Theda Sandiford
Located in New York, NY
My Emotional Baggage Carts are vessels to dispose of racial trauma. The act of making, weaves the sting of macro and microaggressions into the cart, freeing me from these constraints. Each recovered shopping cart is unique, but they all are woven with upcycled materials like rope, paracord, grocery bags, rope lights, beads, fabric, and bottle caps. The cart is with a protective zip tie blanket to trap trauma and prevent its escape. For me, my Emotional Baggage Carts are a release, for you, they are an opportunity to look within and recognize any emotional baggage you, yourself may be carrying and release it. Theda Sandiford...
